Family asking for healing and answers after Palm Beach Gardens officer shoots and kills Boynton man

Corey Jones packed up his drum sticks, got in his car and headed home.

He had just wrapped up another gig in Jupiter with his band, Future Prezidents, and the Boynton Beach man was all smiles before he embarked south early Sunday, a band mate said.

But his car broke down just after 3 a.m. He wouldn't make it home after that.

The 31-year-old Boynton Beach man was shot dead by a Palm Beach Gardens officer who stopped to inspect Jones' vehicle, thinking it was abandoned, and a deadly altercation ensued, police said.

"I don't understand," band mate Boris Simeonov said. "Something seems really wrong here."

Officer Nouman Raja, 38, was on duty in plain clothes and riding in an unmarked car about 3:15 a.m. when he saw Jones' vehicle just off Interstate 95 near PGA Boulevard and stopped to investigate, according to a news release from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

"As the officer exited his vehicle, he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject," Officer Ellen Lovejoy wrote in the release on Monday. "As a result of the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm," resulting in Jones' death.

The police officer was dressed in plain clothes. It might be a tragic accident.

Since when do plainclothes police in unmarked units investigate abandoned vehicles?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought he'd call and check if a tow had been arranged if anything (or just leave it to the marked units).

Instead of these calls for healing, how about people start calling for full investigations and not let up till they get answers? If the event was justified, so be it. Let the healing begin. If it wasn’t, how about calling for jail time? And once sentenced, THEN the healing can begin.

Could be an accident, could have thought he was about to be mugged ala Bill Cosbys son who was murdered changing his tire and the cop could have been reckless, but of course that won’t prevent the race baiters screaming racism with no matter what the real story is, with of course Obama mouthing off flaming it more.

Geez, if it was "a tragic accident", the "officer disguised as a civilian" should at least be allowed to kill the dead guy's dog...

It was certainly tragic for Mr. Jones!

I will wait for more information, before passing judgment.

But if I broke down on the road, that late in that region of Florida, while waiting for a tow truck...the only other person I would appreciate encountering would be a cop in uniform, and in a marked cop car.

Why was the cop in plain clothes, I wonder?

Police haven't specified what type of weapon Jones had.

A drumstick? Or some kind of tool he was using to work on his broken-down car??

3AM broke down on I-95 at PGA Blvd. that’s a bad spot that time of day.. I have to assume that the plain clothes officer in an un-marked car did not have his flashing lights on. Jone’s, scared probably had no idea who was coming up on him there.

I agree. Plain clothes cops are supposed to be acting undercover for crime stings. At least that is what I used to think.

It’s a busy road but not that bad at that time of day. I think the cop was spooked. PBG doesn’t have as high a percentage of blacks as 5 miles down the road in Riviera Beach/WPB.
From local news he was a regular church-goer. Sad circumstances and combination of things. Cop should have identified himself immediately.

Plain clothes cops should not be pulling anyone over especially in south Florida where there have been many criminals in the past pretending to be plain clothes police that end up murdering /raping the people they pull over .

I do not know that a plainclothes cop was investigating a suspicious vehicle.
I do know that a plainclothes cop murdered an innocent, unarmed civilian.

Tragic, but if a cop is in uniform or in plain clothes, the sane thing to do is to call out and identify - even if he sees no one.

Police haven't specified what type of weapon Jones had. And additional details about what led to the shooting haven't been disclosed, pending an investigation.

Of course they say that they can't give out details until AFTER saying the guy was armed.

I just read a followup to this incident which reported that the police officer in this tragic case has been fired.

As it turns out, the investigation thus far has revealed the following facts:

  1. The officer was not in a marked vehicle
  2. The officer was not in uniform
  3. The officer did not show his badge to identify himself before he shot the victim

So that's that. This innocent man was murdered by a trigger-happy cop.

This ex-cop should do prison time for this. There's just no excuse for such idiocy.
