(CNSNews.com) - Following House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthys (R.-Calif.) surprise announcement today that he was withdrawing from the contest to become the next speaker of the House, incumbent House Speaker John Boehner (R.-Ohio) issued a statement saying that he would remain as speaker until a new speaker is elected.
Boehner indicated that he was confident that would be in the coming weeks.
However, Boehner did not announce a date on which the House would hold a vote to elect a new speaker.
After Leader McCarthys announcement, members of the House Republican Conference will not vote today for a new cpeaker, said Boehner. As I have said previously, I will serve as Speaker until the House votes to elect a new Speaker.
We will announce the date for this election at a later date, and Im confident we will elect a new speaker in the coming weeks, said Boehner.

So is this his plan to keep his job? He knew he was going to be shown the door so now he hijacks the process and basically declares himself leader until otherwise? Can he do this?
BOEHNER: JUST GO
He may be smarter than I thought. There may never be the requisite numbers behind any candidate. Boehner could be there for a while. I could see the RINOs and “conservatives” having enough power to block each others candidates. Where would a compromise candidate come from.
Well, but that man a drink!
Getting common sense non corrupt leadership will certainly take persistence patience and a high tolerance for obnoxiousness
But it will happen.
Hell, John, we could have had a new Speaker earlier today.
Just not Kevin McCarthy. There were other names in the running, you know.
I think this move by boner is equally plausible as the RINOe end game. It is equally plausible that the RINOes want to maintain the status quo and beat the conservative caucus by procedure instead of votes.
Everybody who cares about this country should buy a bottle of Scotch and mail it to Boner.
If a resolution to vacate the chair shows the crier the door, what is the mechanism in the Senate that could result in a no confidence vote for Mr. McConnell? And is any Senator moving towards that end?
So this is how he gets to resign with leaving.
Damn Republican Party in both the House and Senate are nothing but the worst do nothing bunch of ignorant politicians that most of us are at a point of voting every damn one out.
Well you old drunk....you sure are one hot steaming pile of dung
Nancy Pelosi or Steny Hoyer need 30 Republican votes to become the next Speaker.
I don't think that represents a serious obstacle.
The Fix Is In!
leave to pubs to not have the discipline nor the statesmanship to back one candidate to rid themselves of an onerous one.
The democrats vote on the Speaker so take those into consideration.
Who's gonna stop him? He's learned from the best!
Vacate the damn chair.
