Because some countries stand by their allies?

Shouldn’t the question be: “Why is Obama so committed to putting Islamic militants in power?”

They’ve been allies for over 50 years.

Watch this frontline report about Iraq: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/losing-iraq/

You will then get an idea of Syria without Assad. We (the world) are in for a world of hurt and time isn't on our side.

It’s really quite simple. Syria and Lebanon (which is also being attacked by Al Qaeda) are the foothold of Orthodox Christianity in the Middle East.

Why is Obama committed to seeing him removed?

Another Westernized, non-Islamic leader removed. Saddam, Ghadify, Assad - Nasty dudes, but not hardline Islamic guys. They suppressed the radical Islamists, so BO wants them to go.

Didn’t we learn our lesson when we emasculated the Shah of Iran?

Ditto.

“Why is Obama committed to seeing him removed?”

He crossed Odunga’s line in the sand to the laughter of the world. The petulant Man child will never forget the ridicule heaped on him.

Excellent analysis. I suspect Putin would personally off Assad, if it served Putin's purposes.

Things to consider:

Russia doesn't want that pipeline from Saudi Arabia to go to Europe, which helps keep Europe under Putin's thumb. Plus, as you said, Russia needs its port in Syria. But, Putin needs Iran (cannon fodder) to help him keep Assad (or some other Syrian puppet) propped up, and in doing so, Putin (with Obummer's bumbling help) releases Iranian oil & gas to the market. Eventually, Saudi WILL get their products to market, even if they have to build a fleet of monster ships to do it, OR, they will find ways to make the Russian / Iranian presence in Syria VERY costly. Perhaps both. Syria is something like 80% Sunni (probably a lot higher % now), so, the long term probability of an Afghanistan-like scenario for Putin is high. Long term, Russia gets crunched by military costs on the one hand, and / or low petro prices on the other.

Then, there is the whole problem of nuclear proliferation in the ME. Sensible people in the US fear it. Russia has a lot more to fear from it, but Putin apparently thinks it's an acceptable risk, perhaps one he can manage. I believe he will find (if he lives long enough) that he is incorrect.

I believe you are correct and the reason is very simple. There is no rationality in jihadism. If the jihadist can nuke us, Europe or Russia they will.
