Washington (CNN)Republican front-runner Donald Trump on Wednesday tried something new on Twitter: defending another presidential candidate.

Trump took to his favorite social medium to show support for fellow GOP presidential hopeful Ben Carson, who has been criticized for saying Tuesday that he would have confronted the gunman who killed nine people at an Oregon community college last week and "not just stand there and let him shoot me."

"Ben Carson was speaking in general terms as to what he would do if confronted with a gunman, and was not criticizing the victims. Not fair!" Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but was it not Ben Carson who once (not all that long ago) said something to the effect that “semi-automatic weapons might be okay for the countryside, but not in urban areas?” In other words, some kind of subjective assessment be made on a myriad of factors unassociated with the clear written dictate of the Second Amendment?

There are certain other candidates The Donald likes and certain other candidates he doesn’t, apparently.

Trump is right. Carson is right. Linseed is full of it.

While I agree Carson is being unfairly maligned here (what else would we expect) I also was reminded of his gun-control position from not too many months ago.

Interesting that CNN goes out of it’s way not to mention who’s been criticizing Carson for comparing himself to the victims. Maybe cause it’s coming from their own ranks?

Carson may be wrong on that, but what does that have to do with this thread?. Trump and Carson have college age kids. And can relate to Oregon events. Linseed can’t and will never have kids, so he is clueless to the reasoning.

Or, just maybe, Trump doesn’t view everything through political lenses.

When someone attacks him, instead of relying on political calculation, he replies back because of his own thoughts and feelings.

And when he sees someone who says something he agrees with, instead of relying on political calculation, he replies back because of his own thoughts and feelings.

Trump needs Carson (for now) to keep the GOPe at bay. He is showing political genius I never expected.

Oh, I think it has some relevancy because of the weapons aspect - taking on a madman who is armed with semi-automatic weapons.

I don’t fault Carson in his feeling on that (confronting), but you have to agree this whole Oregon disaster is ainreferendum on ownership of guns, again. And on this regard, his prior statements matter greatly, at least to me.

Yes he does. It doesn’t hurt that they have known and worked together of children health issues for decades. St Judes being one of their joint interests. See Eric Trump philanthropic group for other dots to connect

Trump is setting the bar on “fairness” so that he can justify breaking his pledge when the GOPe turns out to be unfair.

Brilliant strategy actually.

Chris Mintz did what Ben Carson advocated and Trump concurred.....and yes Carson did make a remark about fire-arms in the city and the rural areas. Trump speaks up for truth and fact....much to the chagrin of Carl Rove who is doing his best to “get Trump”.....

That's because Trump carries.

Carson wants to be one of the guys who took down the terrorist in Paris. While in his head, it's the right thing to do....Would he really do it? I know Trump would.

Does anyone remember what flight 93 taught us on 9/11?

Everyone after 9/11 said if in same situation they would now fight back....how this shooting any different?

That Ben Carson statement is in anyway controversial is a profoundly sad statement about this country and nearly 8 years of Obama

What if Trump turns out to not to be as dumb as his detractors think he is?
