The Russian military, sharply escalating its military intervention in Syria, launched 26 medium-range cruise missiles on Wednesday from four warships in the Caspian Sea, while providing air support for a ground offensive by pro-government forces.

Russian officials said the missiles — which traveled more than 900 miles, through Iranian and Iraqi airspace — struck 11 targets in Syria, but they did not specify which groups were hit.

It was not clear whether the missile strike was coordinated with the ground offensive, which was reported by antigovernment activists and insurgents around the central province of Hama, as well as by the television station of Hezbollah, an ally of Syria’s based in Lebanon.

I assume Iran and Iraq are good with it. That says something.

Wiki says the range is typically up to 1,000 km. I didn’t see specifics for Russian cruise missiles.

They landed on 26 targets of the “ Islamic State” which is an umbrella term for Al Qaeda/ Nusra and Muslim Brothethood in Syria and splinter groups

Very clever attack, too
At night and when the rats thought they were safe to move stuff around because there were no aircraft flying

Exactly right. This was an exercise in coordinating a campaign. ISIS is the guinea pig. Saudia Arabia is going to be the patient.

This “war” is a big free-PR campaign to sell Russian weapons

... and given the success so far, it will probably work

A stupid waste of advanced ammo. Dumb bombs, 0.5 caliber machine guns and unguided air to surface missiles are the perfect means to fight an adversary like ISIS.

0.5 caliber machine guns

Really, really tiny rounds. Interesting concept.

You don’t get a chance to field test these kind of
goodies every day.
They will gather lots of information from this.

curious as to why you think Russian munitions wouldn’t work. they spend 60 billion dollars a year and if you take into account that they allow no waste and pay their military even less than ours it is equivalent to 120 - 150 billion dollar. Just wondering if you have knowledge of Russia’s military.

“In Would War II, the United States and its allies expended 25,000 rounds of ammunition to kill a single enemy soldier. In the Korean War, the ammunition expenditure had increased four-fold to 100,000 rounds per soldier; in the Vietnam War, that figure had doubled to 200,000 rounds of ammunition for the death of a single enemy soldier.”
