MSNBC reported Tuesday morning that aides to Donald Trump estimate that the real estate mogul has spent roughly $2 million on his 2016 presidential campaign to date. That's consistent with a Wall Street Journal report from over the summer that Trump had loaned his campaign $1.8 million and raised another $100,000 for the effort.
That's stunning. And brilliant.
Trump has been the dominant force in the Republican presidential race for, at least, the past four months. (He officially became a candidate June 16.) On any given Sunday, he is appearing on or phoning into some -- if not all -- of the Sunday talk shows. According to Facebook's new Signal interface, Trump is responsible for 80 percent (or more) of the conversation around the 2016 presidential race on any given day. The first two Republican debates netted 24 million and 23 million viewers, respectively -- totals that Trump, rightly, attributes to his presence in the race.
All of that attention has catapulted Trump to the top of virtually every national and early-state poll released in the last few months -- all without Trump ever having to dip into his pocket in any meaningful way. (For someone who is a billionaire, which Trump definitely is, $2 million is roughly the income hit of me buying a pumpkin spice latte.) Remember that Trump, as recently as August, pledged that he would spend as much as $1 billion of his own money on the campaign; "I make $400 million a year, so what difference does it make," he said in response to reporters' questions at the Iowa State Fair.
Trump is the living, breathing example of publicity that you just can't buy. And, to his credit, he's acknowledged as much.

Trump has spent a LONG time and a LOT of money building an internationally recognized personal brand. The real brilliance isn’t the $2M spent on the campaign, it’s being able to show up for the campaign with $100M worth of publicity _already_ delivered to every voter in the country. The real brilliance was making that publicity more than pay for itself along the way (Trump Towers, The Apprentice, Art of the Deal, etc).
Trump needs to start spend some money on a “ground game”.
He is at 2 million for his campaign, while the rest are spending millions upon millions of dollars to get their words out, how stupid of them....
They have the same opportunity as Trump, they can invite the media to their rallies, speaking events, the same as Trump has done...they are wasteful with their funds and will be as wasteful with ours...this shows you how Trump can run a multi-billion dollar company and still get his work done on or before the due date and on or under budget....
I would rather have this type of person in charge of our tax payers funds rather than any of the others, wouldn't you?

Saw a fool who had been a manager or something for Romney on CNN last night and the idiot was saying that Trump has only spent 2mil that it just shows that he isn’t serious...and 2mil is nothing to him. He went on and on dumping on Trump. The guy has a lot of nerve even showing his face after Romney blowing the election.
I’ve only spent $20 on mine so far. Maybe that’s why the media has ignored me.
And helicopter rides for kids and picnics at fairs and providing security for huuuuuge free fun rallies!

You're right. I wonder what kind of a campaign he's got on the ground in Iowa? I hope it's a big one. The Iowa Caucas game is a weird one. You can be number one in the polls but still lose if you haven't got a ground operation in every county.
I hope he's working on this.
A big chunk of the money raised goes to raise money. If you are just spending on campaigning, rather than on money raising, the dollars go a lot farther.
Time to start spending Mr Trump.
