Smith & Wesson has skyrocketed over 80% this year. To put that in perspective, if the stock were in the S&P 500, it would be the second best performer this year, behind only Netflix (NFLX, Tech30).
Rival gunmaker Sturm Ruger (RGR) isn't far behind. It's up nearly 70% in 2015 alone.
This stellar performance comes in a year when many stocks have tanked. Apple (AAPL, Tech30) isn't even positive for the year, and it's shaping up to be the worst year for stocks overall since 2008, the year of the financial crisis.

Will someone let Colt know about this? They just filed for bankruptcy. Don’t ever turn your back on the civilian market....
I have enough guns. I need ammo. Must have more ammo. Can’t find .22 ammo. Must have more .22 ammo.
And in the last two months... (Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2012)
And it continues...
And there is more...
And more...
And yet more...
KEEP TALKING, HILLARY. WE'LL BUY MILLIONS MORE! ;-)
Colt is a self-inflicted injury.
They ignore me (the civilian market) for years, and then lost military contracts. The results should not surprise anyone.
I will never buy a Colt.
It’s not to find, just ridiculously expensive.

Love my M&Ps
We bought two1911 pistols this year. Both are Kimbers. I bought the wife an AR. It’s a Rock River.
Sorry, Colt.
I have a lot of guns.....and not one is a Colt.
Never understood the fascination with them quite honestly. I live the historic Colts from the 1800’s, but honestly, Colt simply cannot compete with other modern firearm makers.
The current crop of Colt ARs is of good quality, but they po'd too many people for almost 30 years to get back the market share they should have never lost. OTOH, if you want to come as close to the "real thing" as you can, for many people there is still nothing quite like a pony, be it on an AR or a SAA.

I need ammo.
Shot gun shells are out there.
Buy those, and some crayons.
Open, melt, pour, close.
Years ago, I bought a stainless steel Combat Commander in .45 ACP.
All was well ‘til that ill fated night when the waves overcame the canoe and I barely made shore with body and soul intact.
Alas, I’ll have to make do with a pawn shop KelTec .380 from here on out.
I will take a Sig Sauer or an FN over a Colt any day of the week for a long gun.
And for 1911’s, Kimber is the unquestioned leader in that market.
For the pocket carry, am I going to pay nearly a grand for a Mustang, when in fact Sig Sauer makes a better gun for less?
What area is Colt’s strength? Because I do not see it.
Our local Dunhams is selling 22 long rifle for 60 dollars a thousand... I had plenty before the terrible boating accident during the local floods (N.C.)
Buy federal ammo and buy VSTO stock. Win-Win.
Not anymore........
I own a genuine stainless Colt Combat Commander, Mark IV Series 80. I have had it for 30 years. It’s a nice piece. But there are far better models from far better manufacturers these days.
Mrs L and I could have purchased almost any 1911s, ok Cabot was beyond the budget, but we settled on Kimber. Yes, they’re pricey but the quality, workmanship, and what you get for your money did it for us.
Colts we didn’t even consider. Mostly because there weren’t any on the shelves that were worth a damn.
This is the only resource I know for locating the least expensive ammo.
They still make the yardstick when it comes to non-boutique ARs, and - off and on - a good Model 1873 SAA oh, and a decent 1911 now and then. All stuff that other outfits can make as well or better, but still superior to a great deal of the competition.
Other than that, they only have the historic name and the trademark that goes with it. I guess I wouldn't say any of those were "strengths" so much as assets and possibly not particularly valuable assets in today's market.
