I always thought the solution to the inconvenience and expense of lawn maintenance could be eliminated by having a zen rock garden instead of a grass lawn.

Nice. Of course, it makes it very difficult for neighborhood kids to sneak on the lawn to retrieve a football.

When I was growing up in Queens, NY, the Italian-Americans always had white rocks and gravel in their yards instead of grass.

If you think lawn care takes work try maintaining a Zen garden like the one pictured. There’s a reason the obsessively focused and patient Japanese invented them.

The grass around that rock would have to go!

The anti-lawn zealotry is in full cry here in southern California due to the drought. Brown, weedy, and dry is what the natural vegetation in SoCal looks like. It isn’t a good look.
