Just considering U.S. government shutdown costs money: experts

Congressional Republicans' threatened federal government shutdown is already costing U.S. taxpayers money and it has not even happened yet, budget experts said on Tuesday.

Whether or not the party's conservative Tea Party faction forces a shutdown this week, there are real costs to discussing and preparing for the possibility of one, they said.

Making shutdown plans during the workday diverts federal workers from other tasks that then have to be put off, which costs time and money, said Yvonne Jones, a director at the Government Accountability Office, a non-partisan congressional watchdog. Jones wrote a report on the 2013 shutdown's costs.

The 16-day government shutdown in 2013 cost more than $2 billion, according to an Office of Management and Budget analysis. Much of that was compensation to employees paid not to work for a combined 6.6 million days.

The shutdown also made a small dent in the economy's growth rate, the Bureau of Economic Analysis found.

Senator Ted Cruz on Monday denounced Republican leadership's willingness to compromise with Democrats to avoid a shutdown, calling it "preemptive surrender."

In an hour-long speech in the Senate, the Republican presidential candidate said a shutdown would prove to voters that Republican leadership will fight for conservative values.

As I under it, the resignation of Crybaby Boehner was to appease the (few) Republicans calling for a shutdown.

And based on the new ruling Uniparty now in control in DC, it just ain't gonna happen.

Just considering U.S. government shutdown costs money

So make it worthwhile and cut a lot of money out of the budget.

Anyone who expects the Republicans to be a “revolutionary” party is riding for a fall.

If it was a true shutdown, it would save us money. But when it’s reopened from a “shutdown”, they make all the back payments anyways.

Congress critters - look the press in the eye, explain why you are taking action, and then tell them to go F themselves.

People in this country are ignorant - but want leadership. That is why so many support(ed) obutthole because while he might be the anti-Christ bent on the destruction of the Christian world - he exudes confidence.

Stop being such sniveling, pathetic, cowards and fight for what is right. 60% of the nation will follow you.

I think it is OBAMA that “threatened” to shut it down, if President Stompy Feet does not get his way.

Just considering U.S. government shutdown costs money

I’ll wager the cost they are talking about are government bureaucrats doing everything they can to get Congress to drop the issue. Starting with complaint to the Press how it costs money to even consider the possibility.

It’s amazing that every company around the world can make actual cuts in their budgets without costing a cent. Their salary employees are not compensated for working late nights and weekends. Most are happy just to keep their jobs.

...lawmakers were working to avoid another expensive shutdown, which conservative Republicans have threatened

The only one who shuts down the government is Obama. Congress does not shut down the government. They do their job and send a bill to Obama. It is Obama's vetoing of the bill that shuts down the government.

Reports are that the last “contributions” from the federal government to Planned Parenthood were in excess of a half a Billon dollars. I don’t give a rat’s ass if it costs ten times that much for the government to deal with dubious “shutdown costs” associated with not approving a budget that gives them one damn dime! Let it all burn.

What, another bogus shutdown. The government will still be able to fund the selling of baby parts and studies of why monkeys throw feces. However, less important things will not be funded.

Failing to take a stand for real cuts in the size of our gargantuan FedGov costs far more than a shutdown. I’d like to see FedGov cut by $400B for next year’s budget, an additional $300B the following year, and a further $200B the year after that. Even with those cuts, FedGov would still be too big, but a start like that would give us breathing room to finish the job.

“[Cruz] said a shutdown would prove to voters that Republican leadership will fight for conservative values.”

I don’t want anyone to prove they’ll fight for conservative values.
I want them TO fight for conservative values.
