Audi and Skoda say 3.3m cars have 'cheat' emissions software

Audi and Skoda say they have a total of 3.3 million cars fitted with the software that allowed parent company Volkswagen to cheat US emissions tests.

Some 2.1 million Audis affected worldwide include 1.42 million in western Europe, with 577,000 in Germany, and almost 13,000 in the US.

Czech-based Skoda said 1.2 million of its cars were involved, but has yet to give a country or model breakdown.

Separately, German prosecutors started a probe against VW's former boss.

Former chief executive Martin Winterkorn will be investigated over "allegations of fraud in the sale of cars with manipulated emissions data," German authorities said on Monday.

The Audi models affected include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5 models, a spokesman told the Reuters news agency.

There were also unconfirmed reports on Monday that senior R&D heads working across the car group had been suspended. Reuters said the suspensions involved staff from the Audi, Porsche and the VW brands.

I would guess that diesel-powered Porsches have the same problem.

Audi may have to come up with a new slogan....................their old one “ Audi - This is truth in engineering.” seems kind of hollow, now....................

That's not news--I heard a number of senior R&D management people at the Volkswagen Group were suspended last Friday as part of VW CEO Martin Winterkorn's resignation. In fact, the German ADAC and TüV have begun to retest every diesel model sold in Germany in recent years to make sure they are in compliance with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards.

Interestingly, the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standard coming circa 2018 could effectively obsolete turbodiesel engines; that's why there's a lot of research into homogeneous charge compression-ignition engines fueled by gasoline (petrol), which could offer diesel-like fuel economy but with gasoline engine-like emission levels.

Europe

In Europe, a number of countries have imposed energy taxes or energy taxes based partly on carbon content.[18] These include Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. None of these countries has been able to introduce a uniform carbon tax for fuels in all sectors. For a review of Europe’s experience with carbon taxation see Andersen (2010)

The Porsche Macan and Cayenne are both available with diesels, and both share platforms with VWs.

There may be other diesel Porsche models as well.

Your article sparked my interest. It appears Audi, like VW, was trying to boost its sales by injecting its computers with the same evil software. What a sooty proposition...fueling even more anger by the public.

The question in particulate now is, will it really matter in the long haul?

It matters to me in the short run. I have an A3 TDI. Have to wait for the corner office to tell me what they are planning. So far the website they put up on Sunday is useless.
