What John Boehner's Resignation Means For Rep. Mark Meadows (Meadows for Senate against Burr!!)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- In a surprise announcement Friday morning, House Speaker John Boehner resigned both his job as Speaker and his congressional seat.

Boehner will leave office at the end of October.

Boehner has been a congressman since 1991. This is the first time a house speaker is choosing to leave office since the 80s.

Congressman Mark Meadows, who represents most of WNC, acknowledges previous disagreements with Boehner, but commends him for his service.

"He served with great honor and distinction and his resignation was done with real class and humility," Meadows said.

In January, Meadows was one of 25 Republicans to vote against re-electing Boehner as Speaker. In July, Meadows filed a resolution to remove Boehner as Speaker.

"It's not as much about John Boehner personally as it is the process. Repercussions, it's still too early to tell what those would be, but voting your conscience is what the American people expect. The results and consequences of that is really something I would gladly pay," said Meadows in July.

This summer, Boehner did not seem concerned with Meadows' proposal.

"This is one member, alright? I've got broad support amongst my colleagues and frankly it isn't even deserving of a vote," said Boehner in July.

Here's what Boehner says now, just eight weeks later:

"It's become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable harm to the institution," said Boehner.

Warren Wilson political science Professor Chris Kypriotis says Boehner's resignation gives Meadows more notoriety.

Warren Wilson political science Professor Chris Kypriotis says Boehner's resignation gives Meadows more notoriety.

Does the professor understand that the meaning of notoriety is pejorative?

Moving this man aside is good for US. Would’ve been better two terms ago.

Boehner resigned because he did not have the votes to stay in.

He has two challengers in the Primary. They will split the anti-Burr vote and he will get the nomination. I expect the Democrat will defeat him in the General.
