Santorum looks (everywhere) for that old Iowa magic, without much luck

FOREST CITY, Iowa — County No. 88. There were 25 people waiting, and a few empty chairs.

“Just to tell you a little bit about myself, uh — I’m, uh — running for president of the United States,” Rick Santorum said. People laughed at the tentative way he said it. As if Santorum knew that this huge ambition did not belong in this room. “That’s the reason I’m here. I’m running for president. We brought free pizza.”

After a brief speech, Santorum took questions. The first one was about — animal breeding.

“There are a lot of activists in Iowa that are trying to prevent animal breeding. Like dog kennels. Cattle. Hogs. Chickens. Everything,” a woman said. She clearly disapproved of this. “If you were president of the United States, could you do anything about that?”

Santorum looked deflated. But the point of this event — like the 91 others before it — was that no place and nobody in Iowa was beneath his attention. So Santorum tried to think of a serious answer. What would President Santorum do to ensure that the farm animals of north-central Iowa could breed in peace?

“I guess the answer is that I would make sure — as president— that, uh, we allow businesses to operate in a legitimate fashion,” Santorum said, after he’d made clear that the First Amendment also protected the activists’ right to protest.

The second question was also about animal breeding.

Santorum is not going anywhere. With the jokes about his name and loser written all over him, he’ll never be President.

Why is he still running?

Santorum is a good man and conservative. Not everyone can be a successful candidate for President. Same with Huckabee who is about on the level of Santorum. Both would be far, far better than any DemRat hack. Just what it is..

Santorum on Hannity says he won’t leave as long as others are only polling 2-4% and he is within the margin of error to be in the top 4 or 5 in Iowa. Believe it or not he still thinks he can win Iowa.

I don't understand it either. Is it ego? Is he delusional? He can't even lock down the animal husbandry vote.

Just another one of the sideshow troupe (Santorum/Huckster/Jindal/Linda/Fiorina/Rubio/Paul). Jeb is in the big, empty collapsing circus tent trying on the tophat.

He’s delusional.

Santorum has better odds of being struck by lightning than winning the Hawkeyi Cauci.

Trump, Cruz and Carson would have to be gone before Santorum would have any kind of chance. The chances of that happening are slim to nil.

We brought free pizza.

Harold Stassen didn't think of that.

I guess the only way he can fill a room is to offer free pizza.

What a swell guy!

Let’s look at that “Iowa magic.” Newt was crushing everybody, then all six candidates from Santorum to Mitt to Ron Paul to Jon Huntsman started attacking Newt with ads and in debates. It crashed Newt - he could not combat 6-1 with no money to speak of.

Thus, Santorum just sort of got votes of people who bought into the negative ads thrown at Newt - but who could not abide Mitt or Huntsman or Paul and preferred Santorum over Bachmann. There was no magic. It fell into his lap as a result of the 6 on 1 versus Newt.

I like Santorum and supported him last time around, but this time he’s just embarrassing himself. He needs to drop out and go back to work supporting his family.

Given that it was Santorum, it was probably Chuck E. Cheese.

Well a little info: I was involved in that election cycle - my job was to chart events minute by minute and consult on how to respond - press releases, talking points, paid advertising copy - etc. I lived it. It’s imprinted now. And that’s exactly what happened.

Newt made two huge mistakes. He did his absurd “relentlessly positive” campaign in reaction to all the negative ads - which isn’t so bad except that Newt was winning when he was relentlessly negative...TOWARD Obama, etc.

Then he pulled the Bain Capital ad mistake. Awful mistake.
