What on earth are these teachers escaping from?

Escaping from having to demonstrate their competency by actual performance of their students in a fair manner.

Maybe some standards were implemented?

Minority teachers have significantly higher quit rates than non-minority teachers.

Here's that ugly kernel of truth, folks: when the going gets tough, whites and Asians hang in there. I'm sorry, but we just do. It's part of our culture, this idea that you dig in your claws and hang on like a pitbull. Certain other cultures have a "hey, don't strain yourself" attitude toward... well, just about everything. I have come to this conclusion over many decades of observation and I did not WANT to come to this conclusion, but it's unavoidable. I don't consider myself racist, because it's not genetic as far as I know. But I am definitely ethnocentric, because it's culture. I mean... I am a teacher. I teach mostly Latinos. A full third of them won't come to school if it's raining.

Seriously, raining. I grew up in the northern Midwest, and we waited for the school bus in the dark in 3 feet of snow. These kids? Ooo, it's raining.

My perspective of many school systems is that students are largely feral animals who know they risk no real punishment. If they're black they really risk no consequence for their ghetto behavior.

Diversity is a joke and is the bane of civilization.

This article misses what could be happening by MILES.

It ignores the fact that the suburbs around these major cities all certainly have diversity quotas of their own for teachers.

So say you're a Black teacher in DC. If you go take a teaching slot in Fairfax County you get much better pay, much better benefits and a much better working environment and if you decide to live there a much better living environment and quality of life.

Correction: you take a set aside teaching slot.

It's a no-brainer.

It would be really interesting to see what the hiring trends for the suburban schools around these cities were over the same period, racial/ethnic makeup of the teachers and where they were coming in from.
