Volkswagen was the only automaker to meet emissions regulations on their diesels without use of a urea injection device. I knew they were full of ?KJI.

Too big to fine?

I bet a plea bargain is in the works.

They should be sentenced to producing only electric cars for the next 20 years.

By the way, when will we see the first all-electric semi-truck?

... the affected models had software in its computer engine controls that could sense exactly when it was being tested for emissions quality

So the regulations specify the emissions limits under defined operating conditions, and the maker designs an engine around the government's specifications. Now the government changes the rules. Typical government.

And OMG, see how much harm has been caused! By the emissions, I mean.

Illegal levels of pollution in those European model diesels translates to more pollution per gallon burned but less pollution per mile driven. The distinction is political rather than useful. The government does not want more efficient cars. It wants NO personal cars.

This story is but one more example of how much smarter private individuals/companies are than government bureaucrats.

Donald Trump is another, more extreme, example. Look how much smarter he is than the other candidates.

And before the expected protesters jump in, Trump was against TPA, and opposed the Iran deal, and thus would not have voted for Corker, which made that deal possible.

My Grandfather (RIP) contention was that the smog equipment cut out 1/2 the pollutants per gallon of gas, but reduced the MPG by half. As the distance to work was the same the pollution was unchanged.

As soon as I read “the EPA and” CARB were making this claim. I stopped right there.

These criminal organizations need to be abolished pure and simple.

In fact, this discovery may lead to European authorities who test engines for Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions compliance to find out if Volkswagen did the same thing for the 1.6-liter I-4, 2.0-liter I-4 and 3.0-liter V-6 engines used on European-market Volkswagen cars. If they find out they’re fuduging the ECU so the engine passes Euro 5 and 6 emissions regulations, Volkswagen could be facing a fine in Europe that could approach €8 billion.

That switch had two modes, which VW calls “road calibration” and “dyno calibration.” Only in “dyno” mode, which monitored for the precise conditions EPA and other agencies would use to test emissions, do the engine’s full emission controls go into effect.

The only thing full of shit is CARB and EPA.

Just what do you think VW is NOT doing with their emission controls? Do they just sit there and are bypassed? They use the exhaust to burn off particulates.

And just what can the software do to "monitor for emission testing"? They hang a sensor in the tailpipe to test for emissions. No software can detect that. Have all these people been failing their emission tests over the years?
