LEWISVILLE The story of a now-former Whataburger employee denying service to two police officers went viral Wednesday, but that former employee told us there are two sides to every story and the incident was just a misunderstanding.
Michael Magovern, who says he was refused service by the employee, is a city marshal in Strawn, Texas. He was back at the Lewisville Whataburger for lunch Wednesday at the request of Whataburger corporate staff, who asked him to come so they could apologize.
"No person should make that comment to anybody," Marshal Magovern said.
News 8 spoke to the former employee who said he has received death threats and asked not to be identified Wednesday.
The marshal and another officer say they stopped into the Whataburger off of Interstate 35 near Main Street Tuesday night and were told, "We don't serve police officers," by the employee.
Magovern said he thought the employee was joking, but when he asked the employee if it was supposed to be a joke, he said nothing.
"The gentleman behind the counter said 'We don't serve police officers,'" Magovern said. "No smile. No hilarity. Nothing."

"First, I thought, 'Oh man, this is a shame all over a joke,'" he [ex-employee] said. "I'm joking around with the police, and I lose my job, something I've had over nine years."
He also claims he tried to explain that it was a joke to the officers.
"I told them, 'Look man, it was just a joke, And I apologize if y'all took it the wrong way," the former employee told News 8. "I said, 'It was just a joke, I do that to a lot of police officers.'"

In his 50’s? Flipping burgers for 9 years?
Something ain’t all there with that boy.
The bozo should know that you don’t joke about refusing service to anyone or about a bomb at an airport. Everyone should know the rules by now.
His “joke” was funny likee cancer is funny, and his post-termination excuses are weak sauce.
He’s a friggen liar on top of a POS.
All these comedians working fast food lately..what's up with that??
Some stories said he was a manager there!
Proof or it didn't happen.
From this statement, I now know why they only show a pic of the officer in the article.
Well, looks like he just learned that some jokes can get you fired.
I’m pretty sure everyone understands what went on here.
Some grievance class employee got wrapped up in the anti-police propaganda and wanted to assert his “power” over “the man”.
Lying b@stard! Or was he practicing `taqqiyah’?
Probably now expects Al Sharpton to surround that Whataburger with #blacklivesmatter protesters.
A non-apology. Says nothing but "You don't have no senses of humor. I dindo nuffin!"
If a joke, then you tell the officers it’s a joke before they turn around and leave.
Typical minority lying, after all they’re a protected class and can do no wrong.
When H-1Bs take over the jobs in your industry, flipping burgers still beats welfare...
For his next act he should go to an airport and joke about explosive devices. See how that works out for him.
So far I have yet to find the employee’s name anywhere. Maybe people made vague death threats on twitter or something but how can he claim having got them if his name has still not yet been released...threats to him specifically?
Am I the only one who pictures this guy with gray hair, bald on top, with a ponytail?
No name of ex-employee.
No photo of ex-employee.
What are the odds he’s a BLM/anti-cop enthusiast?
I can see a standing joke ...
Two counter order takers and one always says I don’t serve officers and the adjacent clerk always takes the order.
Then a newbie cop stops in and blows it to kingdom come. Or maybe the other clerk is different.
This is much ado about nothing. And the unionized win, the peon loses it all.
