The GOPs populist base can help win big battles for the partys business donors in 2017, if it just shuts up for the next few months, GOP leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)52% suggested in a low-drama interview with Politico.
McConnell offered nothing to the partys populist base, except finger-wagging. The pro-life push to transfer funding away from abortion-giant Planned Parenthood is an exercise in futility thats not going to happen until you have a president who has a similar view,
McConnell didnt offer any opposition to President Barack Obamas effort to amnesty millions of illegal immigrants, or his promise to bring in at least 10,000 Muslim refugees from Syria late this year. The amnesty issue split the party from November 2014 to March 2015, and has since boosted Donald Trump to the front of the GOPs 2016 race.
Instead, McConnell touted wins compatible with business goals. This is a critical election, in my view, about whether we want to continue to go down this European path, or whether we want to recapture the growth rates and the greatness weve had most of our history, McConnell said. Obama is imposing massive debt, high taxes on the most successful people, over-regulation.
Instead of voting to transfer $500 million in funding away from abortion giant Planned Parenthood, he touted a bill that would curb abortions after 20 weeks but didnt suggest any tactics or strategy to ensure it is accepted by Democrats or Barack Obama. What we are going to do is move to the pain-capable [20-week abortion] bill sometime this month and see how people feel about that, he said.
But McConnell is following his usual strategy of delaying hard debate until he can fold his cards once President Barack Obama threatens to shutdown the federal agencies, said a Hill staffer.

We need to stop complaining. Where’s the challenge to McConnell?
Well take your time on stopping PP, Mitch. It’s not like people are being murdered or anything. What a leader. /s
The business groups split from us, we didn’t split from them.
Let ‘em experience four years of President Bernie Sanders. They’ll come groveling.
Pity that it doesn’t hurt to be this clueless. Those populists are the votes he needs, and he just flipped them the Big Fat Finger. Explain to me why he is, in any way, different than Obama?
FUMM!!
Is this guy truly that clueless?
F#(&! McConnel and all of his minions.
What a fascist.
George Soros is a businessman. Does mcconnell want to surrender to him too!
“Cutting funding.” Aren’t we really talking about omitting a line item? Is it really not worth it to send a budget to the president and see if he’ll veto it based on what’s not in it?
is an exercise in futility
thats not going to happen until you have a president majority leader who has a similar view
McConnells pro-business strategy is driven in large part by his bet that business donations not a populist strategy will help him reelect nearly all of the 24 GOP Senators who must face the votes in November 2016.
Only 10 Democratic Senators are up for election. McConnell is mostly playing defense, but is hoping to gain seats in Nevada and Colorado.
McConnell is also trying to protect GOP Senators from casting conservative votes that might annoy swing-voters next November.
Oh stand for something you pathetic excuse of a man.
Promising us crumbs... or more accurately, potential crumbs.
What a _______ _______.
Mr. niteowl77
There would be nothing they or any Democrat or the President could do to stop it.
They would announce ahead of time when the government would be shutdown and then say nothing more.
Then it would be up to the Democrats and President to get it up and running again.
I think that would be a good way to put the shoe on the other foot.
Dittos!
Got a better idea.
We’ve been pretty loyal in the past, and Trump is just an expression of our disgust with the treachery against us by the GOP-E.
McConnell’s bosses needs to decide what bones the “Business Groups” are going to throw us, the “Populist Base.” We’ll sniff at ‘em and decide if we want them or if we think we can do better off on our own. If there is enough meat on the bones, though, we might just stick around. Otherwise, “Be seein’ ya!”
After all, unlike the “Business Groups” we’d rather be poor and free, than rich and enslaved.
I have no idea what makes this sniveling, little jerk think that his craptatsic party is going to retain control of the senate.
So the idiot is as short on functional vocabulary as he is on testosterone.
I hate this man. I really, really, really hate this man. The fires of hell aren’t hot enough for this jerk.
Hey Mitch, just defund PP and let Obama veto it. Then do it again and make him veto it again. Over and over and over.
“We need a president” now? But you lied and said you’d do A,B and C IF we gave you the Senate. LIAR!!!
Hell, if we get Congress and a RINO like GWBush they’ll do what they did last time - SPEND EVEN MORE!!! Hell, they’ll probably triple the funding of PP.
NO MORE RINO’S.
