Sanctions were imposed on weapons and dual-use items that can be used in making weapons/NBC.

They were total economic sanctions, according to this article.

And what did Clinton's Secretary of State have to say about this? Madeleine Albright - 60 Minutes

Are there any substantiated numbers of how many were murdered by
Sadaam before “we” took action?

I would have dropped a Pave Blue on Baghdad, Tripoli, Damascus, Teheran, and Kabul.

I would then have given the authorities remaining in those nations 48 hours to produce the responsible parties or 1 million square feet of every one of those cities would be razed to the ground and the earth salted.

War means that you hit your enemy as hard as you can until he begs for mercy. You kill him and his wives and his children and stock and cities and farms, removing his ability to continue warring against you.

When you finally let up on him, you make HIM pay for forcing your reaction.

Nation-building in foreign lands is what destroyed Rome and Persia and Greece and England and ad infinitum. Now America is waltzing down that same garden path, oblivious to reality.

I would have dropped a Pave Blue on Baghdad, Tripoli, Damascus, Teheran, and Kabul.

I would have skipped that peripheral stuff, and gone after the nation most behind 9-11, turning Riyadh and Jeddah to dust.

Then I would have rounded up the obese child molester club known as the Saudi Royal Family and sent them all to Gitmo. Then using Saudi and U.S. records I would send to Gitmo any American politician who ever took their money (there would be a Gitmo section nicknamed "Kennebunkport") Then I would have seized and sealed off the Saudi oil fields and established the Coalition Petroleum Reserve, a source of fuel and revenue for western armies as they lay waste to any Islamic country that says "boo" for the next 100 years.

Yeah the Saudi are our friends.

15 of the 19 hijackers just loved us.

Saudi Osama bin Laden was a dear pal

The Saudis who financed and supported the 9-11 plot - chums. Same for the string of Saudi diplomats in the USA connected to the hijackers, real amigos of the USA.

The Saudis all over the KSA who partied and celebrated on 9-11, like cousins to us!

By the way, do they tell you how to troll FR at your Mosque on Friday?

Thanks.

I recall, working international affairs for the Pentagon during that time and at a think tank in London, not total economic sanctions.

Allowed imports for food, agricultural, hospital, medicines, etc. . .but no other economic activities, and most certainly any activities that could be exploited for military purposes (dual use).

Now, Tom Nagy (used to be at GW) was central to the misinformation campaign about water purification sanctions, but that was not true and he and I went back and forth over that.

Open and honest access to possible WMD (which as you know WMD includes NBC), would have lifted sanctions, but Saddam was hiding and playing the game we are soon to see with the Iranians.

So, economic sanctions remained and Iraq was not able to make infrastructure improvements or engage in economic activity beyond what was allowed for the basics.

Cheers.

I’m sure he included the 350,000 Iraqi’s that Saddam Murdered after the First Gulf War.

It seems the American Media didn’t concern themselves with the Mass Graves our Soldiers discovered when we Invaded.

They were too busy saying that Saddam didn’t have any WMD’s.
Chemical Weapons and Yellow Cake were just window dressing you know.

Assuming the number can be substantiated in some way, they would be including those who died in sectarian violence.

That depriving Iraq of chlorine, which was needed for water purification, resulted in a humanitarian crisis due to lack of clean water, is not in dispute.

Getting back to my original point, if the sanctions hadn't lifted, what do you estimate would have been the cost in lives from continuing the sanctions to Iraq.

Chlorine is a primary component for chemical weapons. Dual use. Sanctioned.

Could have provided but Saddam refused to let inspectors escort the chemical to the water treatment plants and monitor its use, to ensure none of it was diverted for weaponeering purposes.

On him and his regime, not us (is that you Tom?).

Loss of lives due to sanctions is not on us (US). Sanctions could have been lifted at any time if he complied.

Therefore your question is immaterial to the issue at hand because he made and used chemical weapons against his own people and was reconstituting his WMD program.

So you agree with what Allbright said, about the deaths of Iraqi children being worth it? That was so easy for her to say when it wasn't her children dying.

Loss of lives due to sanctions is not on us (US). Sanctions could have been lifted at any time if he complied.

He wasn't going to comply and we knew that throughout the 90s. Getting rid of him was the only way to stop this disaster, yet the only leader with the guts to do it has been vilified for it ever since.

I'm sorry. . .did you say something of merit or are you simply trying to bait an argument?

In either case, not interested and buh-bye. We have nothing else to say.

You choices:
1) Continue to try and provoke because your ego needs the last word, or
2) Be an adult, let it go as there is nothing more to be said.

Your choice, be an adult or not. . .

I just asked you a question. Qualify it any way you want, but a yes or no would work.

You choices:

How about number 3, which is point out that Bush's decision to rid Iraq of Hussein, and I'll add the sacrifice of the troops who did it, allowed for the termination of the sanctions. I figured you would acknowledge that even if not agreeing with the decision.
