New government procedures have caused more than 400,000 immigrants to lose healthcare coverage they received under Obamacare this year, according to the Associated Press.
The change in procedure shortens the timeframe during which foreign-born citizens can resolve eligibility issues, which has caused 423,000 people to lose their state-sponsored benefits.
The healthcare law provides a 95-day window for citizens to resolve documentation issues and remain eligible for coverage. The time-marker was not in place in 2014, because that was the first year of HealthCare.gov’s expanded coverage.
A total of 109,000 people lost coverage due to immigration-related issues in 2014.
The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) believes the vast majority of those who have had their healthcare policies terminated are legal U.S. residents, because illegal immigrants would fear alerting authorities by repeatedly applying for benefits for which they are not eligible.
“Somebody who is trying to submit documents over and over … is someone who believes they have an eligible immigration status,” NILC policy analyst Angel Padilla said.
Padilla said the 95-day window is not problematic in and of itself, but people applying for coverage are unsure about which documents to fill out.
“If it was clearer what the consumer needed to do, we wouldn’t have the numbers that we have,” he said.
The total only includes those who have lost coverage in the federal health insurance market. It does not factor in residents who have lost their coverage in states that run their own exchanges, including immigrant-rich California and New York.
Tough sh!t.
No it means they no longer get free Medicaid or government sponsored private health insurance.
That begs the question why are we importing people so poor they can’t provide their own medical coverage?

Only permanent residents should be referred to as “immigrants.” I know societal forces are pushing to call them immigrants just as they have succeeded in changing the meaning of “gay.” Immigrants, that is permanent residents, are eligible or every benefit of citizenship except voting.
These others are “illegal aliens,” and we should make a point of call them that!
They will just continue to flood our Emergency Rooms for general medical care.
My sister works at a children’s hospital, and this has been a huge issue for years. It takes away service from people who are truly in need of care and increases wait time.
INS should start raiding hospital emergency rooms. imho

Ergo, Mexico’s assertion of continuing jurisdiction over its “nationals abroad,” is inconsistent with any claim to automatic US citizenship merely by reason of birth on US soil.

The difference is that we should not be importing a class of people who are not self sufficient. We have lots of people in this country who are in need of help with their medical insurance and coverage and we have finite dollars.Several people on this board are in programs that range from VA Benefits to Medicare and Medicaid for any number of reasons and most here are native born.
Those who show up at the ER with no means of paying should be held for ICE and deported back to their countries of origin once treated, even if they are legal residents. They should be shipped COD by the cheapest means necessary. A bill provided to their countries Embassy along with a removal of the dollars from their aid packages would go along way to showing our sincere disgust with their poorly run countries.
We are not heartless to those who need help, we simply cannot provide for every sick immigrant legal or otherwise.
We as a republic, regardless of our wealth have no responsibility to take anyone from any other country. Those we chose to allow to come here should be significantly better than the average person already here. Meaning they should at the least be self sufficient, tax positive members of the community.
if they lose all of the benefits which Obama has illegally provided, and the current immigration law is strictly enforced, many will deport themselves.
I don't understand your personal attack on me.
My point is that calling pre-paid Medicare insurance is just another word for the dole. We pay either way--either in taxes or increased premiums. Why would you take that for support of Obama's talking points? He once said something like that, but really, his idea is to hide these payments by calling them insurance. He says its a good thing, I say it's subterfuge.
By the way, the ER would be a great place to scoop up aliens for deportation by ICE, I agree.
