President Obama hiked to Exit Glacier in Alaska last week, with photographers in tow, to send the world a message: The glacier is melting.
Obama blames it on the increasing use of fossil fuels such as coal,oil and natural gas,which he wants to restrict not only in the United States but worldwide. The photo op was designed to build support for an international climate agreement he’s pushing hard to sell, so far with little success.
.....Exit Glacier has been shrinking for 200 years—since 1815—long before widespread industrialization and automobiles. As the president ended his trip,he sounded the alarm again: “This state’s climate is changing before our eyes.”
News flash, Mr. President:Alaska has been buffeted by cyclical swings in climate for thousands of years. That’s true for the rest of the world,too. There was a 300-year-long Medieval heat wave, followed by a Little Ice Age that began around 1300, and then the 300-year warming period we’re in now.
The Anchorage Daily Times ran a front-page story in 1922 recording the “unheard-of temperatures” in the Arctic and glaciers disappearing. “The Arctic Ocean is warming up and icebergs are growing scarcer.”
....[Obama] said:“We want to make sure our grandkids can see this.”
He may get his wish, but it won’t be because of anything he’s doing. The current warming trend appears to be over, speculates Roger Cohen,a fellow of the American Physical Society. The Alaska Climate Research Center reports almost no evidence of warming trends in Alaska since 1977....
It’s a demonstration of Obama’s appalling lack of priorities. The president told his Alaska audience that “few things will disrupt our lives as profoundly as climate change.” Really, Mr. President? How about the epidemic of cop shootings in the United States,or the drowned toddlers washing up on Mediterranean shores as families flee the Middle East, or ISIS beheading thousands of Christians?.....

However, only the Polar Star is a heavy icebreaker capable of accessing all of the Arctic year-round. ....According to the White House fact sheet, Russia currently operates 40 icebreakers and has another 11 planned or under construction. Out of the 40 around 27 are ocean-going icebreakers, some of which are nuclear-powered. Russia is also planning to introduce a new class of super-nuclear icebreakers, by the end of 2020. According to Russian Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Rogozin, the layout of the new vessel, purportedly capable of cutting through 13-feet-thick ice sheets, will be presented by the end of 2015.
Unlike the Cold War missile gap, the icebreaker gap vis-à-vis China and Russia appears to be a reality."

I was looking up shark liver oil barometers on the net last night; and there have been major hurricanes a hundred years ago or more that killed thousands - long before “global warming”, before there was really a whole lot of industry.
Geologist’s have always known this.

Geology gives proof to this contention. If you stand in the Grand Canyon you will see layers of rock deposited in a sandy desert with ocean bottom deposition above and below it.
Yabbut, they didn't do "Billions of dollars worth of damage", so those must have been minor storms.
If real estate values keep going up, it is just a matter of another patch of beach with overpriced vacation homes getting washed off a barrier island before the next "worst ever" storm.
If lives are the barometer, then Typhoons have washed away tens of thousands, and tsunamis have killed more in a single event.
If we don't get the GOPe's head out, we won't need Democrats.

“This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time, to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution,” she said.
Referring to a new international treaty environmentalists hope will be adopted at the Paris climate change conference later this year, she added: “This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model for the first time in human history.”
