LAS VEGAS The U.S. Air Force is giving an ultimatum to owners of a remote Nevada property that over time has been surrounded by a vast bombing range including the super-secret Area 51.
They're being told to take a $5.2 million "last best offer" for their property by Thursday -- or the government will seize it through condemnation.
The owners include descendants of a couple who lost their hardscrabble mining enterprise after the Air Force moved in in the 1940s. Nuclear tests then began in 1951, their mine mill mysteriously exploded in 1954 and they ran out of money to seek reparations from the government in 1959.
Family representatives say they'll reject the deal -- at least for now.
Air Force officials are calling it a matter of national security.
Family members say the site is a symbol of their grandparents' and great-grandparents' blood, sweat and tears

Obamass with his pen and telephone will fix this.
Sorry grandpa, but for $5.2m for a bunch of scrub desert I’m taking the money and running.
“Sorry grandpa, but for $5.2m for a bunch of scrub desert Im taking the money and running”.
You’re not kiddin’.
Seems like an incredibly good deal for land that is otherwise worth practically nothing. They should take it while they can, else, once condemned, which it will be, getting the $50-100 an acre it is otherwise worth on the open market.
Stayed in Rachel one night in order to visit the border of Area 51. Drove up to the gate and piqued the interest of the “cammo dudes” in their white Cherokees.
If a symbol of their grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ blood, sweat and tears can be an influence on market value then they will get paid more.
Otherwise the property is going to be worth its market value.
Good news is there are appraisers out there who are good at testifying to “market value” more than anyone would reasonably think.
I would too.
Five mil should buy a pretty good sized chunk of the state.
Need more room to test-fly them alien UFOs.

$5.2 Million? You could build a pretty nice monument to Grandma and Grandpa somewhere nice.
The county took part of our ranch and built an airport on it. If we had gotten that much for it we might have felt a little better about giving it up.
It would be a very easy decision.
But I would stipulate that it would not be taxed.
They should stipulate that it would not be taxed.

I dunno. How many places on earth do you have a high UFO traffic count for a fueling station, convenience store and saucer wash?
Land-locked doesn’t matter if they fly in and out.
“Conclusion: The article is poorly written, containing little of the necessary detail to draw an informed conclusion”.
Bingo!
I don’t know-— a piece of pristine wilderness property with mineral and maybe petroleum reserves surrounded by an Air Force installation preventing developers from building neighborhoods for retiring east coast liberals or HUD housing ...with free air shows in fabulously blue desert skies ... should be worth more than that. Add to that possible revenue for renting cabins to Chinese spies and it could be priceless.
Think abut it... no liberals for miles... sweet.
