Civil District Judge Kern Reese held New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in contempt Friday (Sept. 4), but said he would give Landrieu one week to come up with a reasonable plan to pay an outstanding judgment due to the city's firefighters before imposing a house arrest sentence.
Reese said he understood Landrieu was constrained by a tight budget, but that did not mean he had the right to shirk a legal judgment.
"This is a legal issue," Reese said. "We all have responsibilities and those responsibilities have to be met."
If Landrieu didn't have a payment plan in place by Sept. 11, the mayor would be spending his weekends at home until that changed, Reese said. From 5 p.m. Fridays to 5 p.m. Sundays, the mayor would not be allowed to leave his house without the "express written consent of this court."
Landrieu, who appeared in court along with the City Council, had no reaction as Reese made his ruling and left the courthouse stone faced without answering questions. He would later hold a press conference where he responded to the ruling.
The contempt order stems from a decades-long legal battle centered on state-mandated raises that previous administrations did not pay in accordance with the law. The city agreed last year to pay $75 million to satisfy the firefighters' back pay claims but never actually came up with the money
The judge sounded almost apologetic as he spoke from the bench.

Well, the FF’s may be “due” the money, but the PE’s are bankrupting this country. FF’s and Cops are not worth what we pay them, and here in CA they all get to retire at 50 with full benes! Down in LA the lifeguards on the beaches are FF’s so they get to retire at 50 after 25 years of ogling women in bikini’s for a living! Firefighters: "We eat until we're sleepy then sleep until we're hungry!"
Just throwing it out there, but how is the Mayor’s ordeal different than the City Clerk who refused Marriage licenses? We are good with one but not the other? Both are elected officials defying a court order.
Well, this judge certainly got the point across to Landrieu didn’t he? However, how do you get blood out of a turnip, after all NO has been through. The money has certainly flowed into the city for the recovery, but it was earmarked and designated. Much of it federal, and nothing addressed the firefighters. $75 million. Some corporation could address that debt in exchange for name and recognition on every street corner?
If the judge wants to make the city’s budget, there’s a process for running for office.
But JAILING someone for failing to follow the recommendation of the court since, well, see above, judges don’t make city budgets...
Since when is this country supposed to be ruled by judges?
Why house arrest? Get him in a jump suit with the queers, drunks, prostitutes, dopers and the rest of the city residents ... heck, he could do a little politicing while in there.
The money has certainly flowed into the city for the recovery, .......They had money coming in for YEARS, but the Democrats stole every last damned dime. Where were the levees shored up, prior to Katrina? No money.

They are definitely bankrupting NJ; an acquaintance retired as a local cop at 46 (25 years on the job), and will probably live as long on the pension plan/benefits as he ever worked. This isn’t a dangerous area; never had to use his gun, was never assaulted, etc.. This is why taxpayers (both corporate & individual) are fleeing NJ.
Oh, I know. A lot of money was sopped up by sops, the lefty kind who would do that in a time of crisis.
I don’t even know the story on the firefighters, who have been put off for years trying to collect their millions due them. I’m just saying, where can millions come from, in New Orleans, unless a donor contributor is willing to pay these gallant men their due.
So, if I understand this clusterf*ck correctly, the pig judge is ordering the mayor to come up with the cash or go to jail.
Let’s count the numbers. At best, the pig judge has a dozen marshals to carry out his illegal dictates.
The mayor has a few thousand cops to drag that fascist judge into the street and decorate him from a lamppost. And nobody will give a hang if that happens.
This entire matter is a preview of what will happen when the rule of law no longer exists.
Te rule of law already no longer exists. It simply a mater of time before a few patriots turn on the judicial oligarchs. Hanging a few of these tyrants would be a public service.

Same here in CA. When you pull up the county employee salaries and list them by the highest first, behind the doctors at the county hospital ( none of whom has a name you can pronounce) come our beloved Firefighters. Thanks to their union “work rules,” the average FF earns about $200,000. plus benefits. Most of them have side businesses because they have so much time off, and they “work” the sick leave ( you know, I’ll cover for you, then you’ll cover for me, and all of it is on OT). These practices get some of the more “energetic” ones annual pay in excess of 250,000. And to top it off, they retire at 50. We’ve had two fire chiefs retire in close succession. They made $188k, but they are retiring at about $100k more than than. Do the numbers, if these thieves (and their spouses) live to be 80, each one of them will cost the taxpayers $10 million for a 30 year stint being retired! It simply isn’t sustainable, so I just wonder how the financial crash will happen, and when. It isn’t a question of IF!
We had a report out recently about the number of cops here in NJ raking in 6 figures; many of our firefighters are volunteers (though the paid ones, holdovers from when we were a manufacturing economy, are underworked and overpaid - sleeping all day in the firehouse before going to their second jobs). Our teachers are the worst, with union work rules that make them the heaviest burden (and present in every area, unlike police which are unaffordable to some of the more rural communities in NJ). While arguing the nonsense that they are underpaid, teachers and cops want to keep the public distracted from the real death blow they deal to the state: their retirement costs & benefits. A nearby town (Rutherford NJ) had a police chief retire recently, and he was owed over $300K in unused time (on top of his pension, and the cost of his replacement). The town eventually agreed to pay it out over three years (due to solvency issues); I’m sorry, but I hope the parasite doesn’t get to enjoy one cent of it.
They have literally destroyed NJ, which at one time was a great place with mountains and the ocean just a couple of hours apart, plenty of farmland/open space, and plenty of jobs.
