Scott Walker opens Texas swing promising to`wreak havoc on Washington’

HIGHLAND PARK — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker brought his mild manner, shy smile and promise to “wreak havoc on Washington” if elected president to a century-old soda fountain in the North Texas enclave of Highland Park Wednesday, opening a three-day swing through Texas.

“One of the things I heard inside there and I hear from other people across the country is that Americans are looking for someone to shake things up,” Walker said, speaking before a throng of reporters after spending more than an hour working his way through the crowd of folks gathered at the Highland Park Soda Fountain. “They want someone to wreak some havoc on Washington.”

“I think that people have seen that I’ve been able to wreak some havoc in our state Capitol on the big government special interests,” Walker said. “We even took on a lot of the Washington base that tried to take us out first in terms of protests when we pushed big, bold reforms, and then they tried to take me out in a recall, and it took people from here and all across the country to hep us defeat that recall.”

“We will not be intimidated by anyone, whether it’s big labor union bosses, whether it be from the other party or whether it occasionally even be members of our own party,” Walker said. “We’re going to shake things up in Washington. We’re going to wreak some havoc and put the American people back in charge.”

Walker will be doing a similar event at Bill Miller BBQ on Broadway in San Antonio at 4:15 p.m., and Friday morning at Lori’s Cafe in Midland.

In between, the governor will be holding a series of private meetings in Texas. His staff didn’t specify with whom, but presumably they included past and potential future donors. Early on, Walker was seen as a prospective front-runner, acceptable to both the party’s establishment and more ideologically conservative wings. But as the field crowded up, and especially with the big-footed presence of New York real estate mogul Donald Trump, Walker’s fortunes have waned.

Texas, with its huge bounty of delegates and early March 1 spot on the primary calendar right after the Iowa and Nevada caucuses and New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, could play an important role in determining the Republican nominee.

But Walker’s potential to rebound and be a player in Texas depends on his performance in the February caucuses in his neighboring state of Iowa, where, according to recent polls, he now places fourth — well behind Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, and just behind Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who will doing a three-stop campaign swing through Texas Thursday that begins in Fort Worth, takes him to Tyler and ends in Kingwood.

Walker’s calling card remains that he would prove a broadly acceptable nominee, and that his electoral success in Wisconsin — where he won election in 2010, re-election in 2014 and a recall election in-between — suggests he would prove a formidable general election candidate.

“Texas is a red state. People like red state governance. The difference is I governed like a red state governor and I live in a blue state, so if you want someone to take on the mess in Washington, which is in many ways like what I inherited in Wisconsin, you need a governor who’s actually been tested under the most difficult of circumstances,” Walker said.

“You really want to wreak havoc,” Walker said, “you actually need to have someone who has been tested taking things on. I have not only run something, but I have done it in the most difficult circumstances of any of the candidates out there.”

“We will not back down, we will not be intimidated,” said Walker, whose efforts to reduce the power of public sector unions led to an unsuccessful effort to recall him.

A reporter asked, “There are those who say Donald Trump is wreaking a little havoc on your campaign, your poll numbers are sagging, how are you going to change that?”

Walker replied that he used to run track and “the only time it mattered whether you were ahead was at the finish line. I plan on being ahead when we cross the finish line in 2016.”

Wreaking havoc? Wait a minute. I thought that was Trump’s assignment. Read it in the paper.

"The 2011 Wisconsin protests were a series of demonstrations in the state of Wisconsin in the United States beginning in February involving at its zenith as many as 100,000 protesters opposing the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10, also called the "Wisconsin Budget Repair bill." Subsequently, anti-tax activists and other conservatives, including Tea Party advocates, launched small pockets of counter protests. The protests centered on the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, with satellite protests also occurring at other municipalities throughout the state. Demonstrations took place at various college campuses, including the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. After the collective bargaining bill was upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on June 14, the number of protesters declined to about 1,000 within a couple days.

The protests were a major driving force for recall elections of state senators in 2011 and 2012, the failed recall of Governor Scott Walker in 2012 and a contentious Wisconsin Supreme Court election in 2011."......

At least Scott Walker has a sense of humor about the media’s attempt to put words in his mouth [just as they did with a Canadian wall, anchor babies, college rape reporting, Wisconsin’s economic growth, forced ultrasounds, etc.].

The set-up and follow through: Headline news wildly lies about something said or done, then ridicules the candidate for telling the media they’re making it up.

But you go right on spreading that. It’s all you have.
