Climate change already happening in Florida, Nelson tells UF

GAINESVILLE — Florida and Alaska are about as far apart as two states can be from be from each other physically, geographically and climate-wise.

But U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D- Fla., on Monday said he’s witnessed the devastating effects global warming is already having on both states.

“I walked to the edge of the glacier and saw that it’s really melting,” Nelson said of his mid-August visit to a US Coast Guard base in Kodiak, Alaska.

He also recalled how Alton Road in Miami Beach was flooded during high tide before million-dollar pumps were installed.

Nelson visited University of Florida Monday to talk with geology professor Andrea Dutton about her groundbreaking climate change research and how it can be used to persuade climate change doubters to support and enact policies to reverse the effects and lessen the impact.

Gainesville City Commissioner Helen Warren said she was concerned that there is not enough discussion about the regional impact climate change could have on agriculture and water quality.

She also observed that people from the Tampa Bay area and South Florida are already migrating inland to get away from chronic flooding and saltwater intrusion. . .

The salt water intrusion mentioned in the article is an effect of the over pumping of groundwater in areas near the coast. When water is drawn from the ground faster than it can be replaced by rain, saltwater from the ocean fills the vacuum.

The "chronic flooding" in coastal areas mentioned is what happens when you build communities on barrier islands and floodplains with elevations of three to four feet.

Ice is melting in Alaska in mid-August - it's global warming!

Yes, saltwater intrusion is caused by overpumping. The freshwater sits on top of the saltwater in essentially a lens. if you overpump, you destroy the lens and get mixing of salt water and fresh water. Unfortunately it can take the lens years to recover once that happens.

A scientific journal article over a month ago predicted a mini ice age in 20-30 years. And there was much documentation to prove the point.

15,000 years ago there was climate change. It caused last ice age. It was followed by global warming which melted all those ice glaciers and formed the largest body of fresh water on earth...we call it The Great Lakes!

Climate change has been going on for Billions of years and it will keep going on after humanity has become extinct.

Glaciers melt and glaciers re-freeze. Is that news to this guy?

Well they were much better when Jimmy Johnson was coaching them.

Right. Because we all know how global warming defies gravity, allowing some parts of an ocean to rise more than other parts (tides excepting of course.)

My Senile senator is an idiot...

People are moving inland for three reasons...

Saltwater intrusion is caused by too much fresh water pumping....

Flood insurance has sky rocketed...

Flooding is caused by piss poor planning in new developments...

Global warming, climate change isn’t the reason...

“I walked to the edge of the glacier and saw that it’s really melting,” Nelson said of his mid-August visit...

Two thoughts on this. First, someone should explain to this guy, maybe using crayons and small words, that glaciers have to melt. If they did not, they would have long ago over-run the earth. Oh, that's right, they have done that. We called it an ice age. In non-ice age times glaciers melt and calve. All perfectly natural Mr. Nelson. Second, maybe someone should remind Mr. Nelson that August is summer time in the northern hemisphere, and any melting would probably be at it's peak and very noticeable right about then.

He also recalled how Alton Road in Miami Beach was flooded during high tide before million-dollar pumps were installed.

Yeah, google it. Apparently it has long been prone to flooding from rains and tides because it is basically on a sand bar and...

The neighborhood is often inundated by rain or even just high tides, as the southwest area is among the lowest-lying land in Miami Beach.

Well friggin' duh! Climate change my lily white ...

"I walked to the edge of the glacier and saw that it’s really melting,” Nelson

That's what is supposed to happen at "the edges" of glaciers. It's what enables them to slide ever so slowly downhill, and where they melt they often create streams and lakes or the fresh water runs into fjords. Alaskans have been making money for ages letting tourists see glaciers calve as they slowly slip downhill.

So Nelson, can you explain to me the difference between glaicers melting because they have been doing that steadily since the ice age ended, glaciers melting because of a slight increase in carbon dioxide, and glaciers melting because its summer? How can I tell them apart?

Nelson...It DOES get above freezing in Kodiak, Alaska in AUGUST, you dolt......

The average temperature on Kodiak Island, Alaska in July and August is 60 degrees....

Yes, glaciers will melt at 60 degrees....
