If people are wondering why conservatives are supporting Trump when they know his past track record pegs him as a liberal at best is the fact that many conservatives in elected office haven’t been very conservative lately. Trump is filling the void and again why blame him when the GOP is stumbling all over itself trying to distance itself from conservative principles.

That’s a great point. I see a lot of well meaning FReepers painting Trump as a liberal. They certainly have a lot of his past statements and contributions to point to.

Trump supporters say he’s evolved, and he supported liberal positions when it didn’t count, before he got in the political game. They say he contributed to Libs because “that’s the way you get things done in business”.

I’d love to see a self funded, ideological conservative with an impeccable conservative record and no ties to the GOPe come along and resonate with voters. Ted Cruz fails in all these categories at this point, and he’s the closest option to this ideal.

The GOP has taken conservatives for a ride, not once but many times. They attack conservative candidates who challenge GOPe incumbents. They mock the Tea Party. They hate us, and only view us as rubes who will vote for a candidate who runs right and pivots left after the election.

These go along, get along GOPe bastards are helping Obama dismantle this country. Trump, warts and all, is the only outside the game option who has a chance to reform the GOP and make it an opponent of the Leftists again, instead of an accessory to liberal big government schemes.

Even if he turns out to be a turncoat liberal, that’s the same thing we get with a GOPe candidate. If Hillary/Biden/Sanders wins, we get our socialism straight up without the deception.

Simply put, there’s nothing to lose by taking a chance on Trump. The GOPe created Trump, and watching them sputter with rage at his poll numbers is damn satisfying.

We’ll see in the next few weeks if Trump can handle the big weapon in the GOPe arsenal...the negative TV blitz. If he can counterpunch or dodge that attack, short of self destruction or assassination I think he’s going to win.

You know, I never thought he was all that much of a lib in NYC. He was always carrying on about crime. Whenever a major crime - especially one against a woman - he was always shouting from the rooftops. I realize that some of his positions are, indeed, liberal, but most people in NYC thought he was a neanderthal on issues.
