Ben Carson surges past Jeb Bush to No. 2 spot as Republicans embrace outsiders

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has surged to the No. 2 spot in the GOP field, overtaking former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and, combined with front-running businessman Donald Trump, gives outsiders a firm grip atop the Republican presidential race.

Combined, the two men have 40 percent of the vote in the latest Quinnipiac University Poll. Add in businesswoman Carly Fiorina’s 5 percent, and nearly half of Republicans say their No. 1 choice for president is someone who has never won a public election.

But it’s Mr. Carson’s swelling support that stands out.

“He’s the safe rebel,” said Michael McKenna, a GOP strategist and pollster.

Despite a debate performance that garnered solid but not overwhelming praise, and an August devoid of high-profile television feuds that much of the rest of the GOP is engaged in, Mr. Carson overtook Mr. Bush in the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls as of Thursday.

Ben Carson is doing a SUPER job, and in Colorado Springs had a crowd bigger than Trump. I get upset that CNN always puts on the news Trump and Bush, and avoids Carson. Is it because they are really racist... Or are REALLY afraid of ideas based on logic, reason and reality.

They’re also not counting Cruz as an outsider. Add up Trump, Carson, and Cruz and in some polls it’s a majority.

He had hundreds at his rally. How is that bigger than Trump? I read the article from the newspaper and it said hundreds showed up.

Jeb is now
like an armadillo carcase
on the yellow line
receding into the distance
left far behind
alone
rotting.

Really? They aren’t deluting the Trump rebel vote. They might hedge on it some, but, there is a difference between hundreds and thousands.

I really like Dr. Carson but I cannot understand his popularity in these polls. He obviously is smart enough but I think the politics in D.C. would steamroll him.

Plus, by raising Carson’s profile they can paint supporters of other more popular candidates as redneck bigots who can’t stand black people.

The Republican party has never been the party of bigots or racists. It’s the DEMS who are that way.

Of course. But the media narrative is a different story.

Carson doesn't have the range or charisma to get very far in the race, but we both know how the MSM will explain his inability to gain traction.
