People have been donating to Trump all along. Its going to take a lot of money to counteract all the millions in negative ads Bush is going to buy for next money.

If people want to donate with no expectation of access then fine let them.

I think Trump said, early on, that any donations his campaign receives will go towards filming ads...or something like that.

He doesn’t need the money, but understands that folks want to support/participate...and will put it to good use.

“All representatives are supposed to be obligated to the people who voted them into office and their conservative principles (if they had them to begin with), not who wrote them a check.”

That is what Mr. Pearson taught me in the 8th grade. However 60plus years later, I know for a fact Mr. Pearson was wrong. On purpose or just misinformed? I donno. But I do know there is no way I have been represented by any official for the vast majority of that time. But I guarantee the money men have been represented that whole time.
In my opinion, every damn one of that 545 member criminal conspiracy known a Washington D C has been bought and paid for. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Most likely. He just turned down $5 million from a friend because he said he didn’t want to have to disappoint him later by saying no to something.

All politicians are actors. What sets them apart are their actions.

Good to hear. Is there a limit on how much you can donate?

A limit? Sure...

An individual can contribute $2,600 at most to a candidate for federal office in a single election cycle. That means you can give $5,200 to a single candidate in an election year: $2,600 during the primary campaign, and $2,600 more during the general election.

I liked your explanation about Barry Goldwater.

How about comparing Trump to Ben Carson who has said recently he was once a flaming liberal, and then there is Ronald Reagan who was a Democrat a very long time.

I think Trump in his life has practiced self-reliance, and hard-work. His experience with Liberals has educated him in so far as he sees the folly in leftist words and actions. Sometimes it takes time to get your thinking right look how many people in history have become saints even though they were once great sinners.

Would it be a surprise to anyone if many on the Free Republic forum have gone through a conversion process?

Don’t underestimate Trump as a strategist.

By bringing up the issue of hedge fund managers, somebody wanting to donate millions to him, and his willingness to take “no strings attached” money, Trump is setting up to expose and interdict the supply line of his opponents.

That supply line is the Super Pac. It’s a way to contribute millions to a campaign, avoid the limits and the voters.

The Super Pac isn’t supposed to coordinate with the candidates it supports. Yeah, right, I believe that as much as you do. The rule is a fig leaf.

Super Pac money from Wall Street and the Chamber of Commerce fuels the GOPe, props up weak candidates who are only there to split the vote in key states. Money is solicited from individuals mainly to hide where the real dough comes from. “I have thousands of small donors!”

Trump has now inserted the idea that big donors want something in return. If he embraces small donors and swears off Wall Street Super Pac monies, the pressure is on for others to do the same. It takes the big donors out of the shadows and makes them declare who they are buying, and exposes them to the risk of being seen as backing a loser. That’s a pretty big risk for kingmakers, who sell the idea of a sure thing.

You may hate Trump the man or Trump the politician, but he’s outmaneuvered his opponents on more than one occasion. You can admire it as a supporter or respect it as an enemy, but he has the instincts of a military commander. Isolate, envelope, destroy.

Go check out the Conservative Treehouse for a more detailed and lucid explanation of this theory, and check out the Scott Adams piece on Trump and his stratagems.

Trump may self immolate or hit an insurmountable obstacle, but so far he’s made some smart moves, and I won’t be surprised one bit if this is one of them.

Cut off the enemy from his supply lines. Strategy 101.

Billionaire or not, it's silly to expect that Trump will pay for the entire campaign on his own.

I agree.

Apparently so does FOX, CNN, MSNBC, etc. etc., as they donated tens of millions of free publicity. And more than that, usually the kind of publicity that money is not able to buy.

More than that, they fought over who got to give first.

Even the bad publicity was the kind he was able to spin into gold.

Trump, you gotta love him.
