Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to seriously penalize employers hiring illegals? Drying up employment prospects should incentivize illegals to go back home.

As long as you’re willing to jail all the politicians that incentivize them to come here also.

Good article. They sent them back on a boat trip 500 to Veracruz 500 miles into Mexico. It was not a pleasant trip. The guest worker program was for 400,000 Mexicans a year with up to only 12 to 52 weeks.

According to this article 85% of the Mexicans here are illegal.

The laws are on the books to do just that. They are not being enforced. It's called selective enforcement by the current power brokers.

We could do three things if we have the courage.
Enforcement, deportation, remove the lure.

Simultaneously bring V Corp home from Germany. Give the CG, the mission of securing the Southern border. We'd be saving money in the long run having our soldiers here rather than overseas.
Also those troops would be spending their pay here.

Turning employers into law enforcement officers is bogus, particularly with all the fake ID that's out there.

There's a better way to round up illegals: a bounty system with heavy penalties for false arrest or harassment. Add bonuses for arresting coyotes and drug runners. Just put the training materials and applicable laws on a web site and set up test centers in strip malls by which to earn a credential and deputize prospective bounty hunters upon completion. The program would be Constitutional as equivalent to a letter of marque and reprisal, with legal action extending even onto Mexican territory.

That should be part of it. Enforce current law. Imagine a business owner and its managers going to jail and being fined thousands of dollars, their business and stores being taken under RICO and sold at auction. Imagine they did this in front of TV cameras.

This country wouldn’t have an illegal alien capable of a job anywhere.

Require e-verify with imprisonment for failure to comply. Arrest and jail some wealthy homeowners who use illegals’ lawn services and wetback nannies. Load up a freighter with illegals of any provenance but mostly Spanishoid taken from all over the country and leave it in the harbor at Vera Cruz with the engine permanently disabled. Run a dozen busloads down to Southern Mexico and accompany them with armor and drones in case the Mexicans choose to try to bar the caravan. In other words do some very public moves like that and you only have to actually deport a very small percentage. Definitely include visa overstays in the ceremonies.

http://www.thestarpress.com/story/money/2015/08/23/hicks-deportation-follies/32071259/

“We could even charge a fine or fee for those who entered illegally, but who have afterward been law-abiding citizens. This would enable us to more easily deport the folks who are actual criminals and allow us to support communities with high concentrations of immigrants. I don’t think that idea will be much talked about, though. It is too easy, sensible and cost effective. Instead we hear calls for mass deportation.”

Of course he’s apparently ignorant to the fact that over 90% of recent “immigrants” from central America who were released and given court dates, well, they simply FTA’D (failed to appear) and melted away to safe houses.
It seems likely they would ignore the fines, doesn’t it? That they would probably take the amnesty—that those like you would demand as a quid pro quo—for the (sham) agreement to pay fines, and other nonsense, and run.
The good professor doesn’t really explain how charging a fine that no one really plans to enforce (like the entire 1986 amnesty act) would help us deport “folks who are actual criminals” (obviously he doesn’t think they are broken any laws) and how (or why) the (unpaid) fines should go to support communities with lots of “immigrants”.

This author’s excuse is that he’s an economist and educator.

“Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to seriously penalize employers hiring illegals?”

You’ve been around FR long enough to have been exposed to the reality of the Uniparty and dealing with illegal aliens.

Other than being a noob, what’s your excuse for the consistently fatuous GOP-e propositions you are always posting as solutions to this serious problem?

There’s not a reason in the world why we couldn’t do both. A nation such as ours is perfectly capable of multi-tasking. This is a multi-faceted problem which needs to be attacked on multiple fronts.

Already is a system to penalize employers.

Problem is the employer is not responsible for the validity of ID shown by an applicant.

Forged ID business is flourishing.

Unless you make it a CRIMINAL offense to hire illegal, nothing works.

That would be nice except for this fact. An employer is not allowed to ask a potential hiree if they are really legal. All the potential hiree has to show is two pieces of I.D., with one being a picture I.D. If an employer violates that rule, he/she is subject to fines and a lot of lawyer fees.

Furthermore, the fake papers are so good that even the authorities can't discern if said papers are legitimate or fake. In the State of Washington, an employer does not dare to hire under the table. If that person is injured while on the job, you can bet your bottom dollar that L&I, Labor and Industries, will be on you like smell on stink. And, it never is pretty.

Employer penalties are a needed step in the process but bear in mind that the hugely criminal element within the already illegal whole does not work for Tyson or some family owned grower in the central valley; they live in a 4th cousins' garage and either don't worry about papers or forge paper to allow them to drive, get welfare, etc. Oh, and occasionally do odd jobs, or steal stuff...or maybe kill or rape someone in their search of the American Dream/act of love.

If you want to rely on penalties than admit that many legal immigrants (or Reagan legalized aliens) are happy to house and abet illegals here simply because the life is easier here and they can send money home to help build the family finca...after all, it worked for the last round of invaders.
Penalties should be extended to ANY US citizen or legal resident aiding or abetting the invaders in the same manner as employers should be penalized for hiring illegals.

Of course, we also need a wall, surveillance, and armed troops along our southern border.
BUT, once the southern border is tightened up it will be necessary to ramp up efforts on the northern border because terrorists and smugglers will exploit our one truely friendly border.

It is NOT the job/purview of ‘employers’ to do the job that D.C. was empowered.

I said it once, I’ll say it again: The EASIEST, and constitutional solution is to END the welfare state and return to a service base economy (you use hospitals/schools/services, you PAY for hospitals/schools/services). That includes ‘foreign aide’ as well.

This ONE step would solve, IMO, 90% of the illegal ‘problem’.

I too have approved the idea, from other FRiends, that once caught, all is stripped (ill gotten gains) and used to deport. Each offense after is 5 yrs. (2nd = 5, 3rd = 10, 4th = 15) hard labor

Yes. That's what's generating much of this problem. Eliminate the source.

Yes, like put the onus on employers who hire employees with fake SSNs. Don't let them get off on ignorance. If they do it, fine them $100,000 per instance.
