The government of Slovakia has said it will take in struggling migrants from Syria and other countries under a European Union scheme to share the burden of 40,000 new arrivals to the continent, but stipulated it will only be taking Christians, and not Muslims.
"We want to help Europe with the migration issue. We could take 800 Muslims but we don't have any mosques in Slovakia so how can Muslims be integrated if they are not going to like it here?" interior ministry spokesman Ivan Metik said, arguing that the policy is not discriminatory.
"We want to really help Europe with this migration wave, but we are only a transit country and the people don't want to stay in Slovakia," he added.
BBC News reported that the migrant crisis in the EU reached record highs of 107,500 in July, with more and more people coming in, fleeing instability and poverty.
Over 240,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean this year, reaching the shores of Greece and Italy before being reallocated to other countries.
The U.N.'s refugee agency has said that aid is needed for all the migrants. Babar Baloch, Central Europe spokesman for the UNHCR, responded to Slovakia's decision: "Resettlement is greatly needed for many refugees who are at extreme risk among the world's most vulnerable groups."
"We encourage governments to take an inclusive approach while considering refugees for resettlement and should not base their selection on discrimination."
Slovakia is predominantly a Roman Catholic country, according to the CIA Factbook, with non-Christian faiths making up only a minority of the 5.5 million population.
The Telegraph added that Slovakia is set to host 200 migrants under the EU plan, and will ask new arrivals to state their religion.
The rising tide of immigration to Europe has also stirred the question of community and religious cohesion, especially in countries like Germany, which has said it expects to receive as many as 800,000 asylum applications this year.
Large anti-Islamization rallies were held earlier this year in German cities, such as events organized by the PEGIDA movement, a German abbreviation for "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West."
While Pegida's supporters have said that Muslim migrants are having a negative effect on society and changing the country's culture, counter-demonstration rallies for unity have accused the movement of spreading anti-immigrant xenophobia.
Let's be honest -- IT IS DISCRIMINATION. And they have every right to discriminate.
its a perfect example of informed right minded clear headed discrimination.
To hell with muslims.
They've made it abundantly clear that they cannot get along with anybody for very long.
Discriminate all day long for all I care.
I don't want them, either.
So WHAT if a NATION decides to do a certain thing somebody ELSE considers _____________ (fill in your own pet offense)
NO ONE is condemning an entire nation for beheading human beings .... and if THAT ain't discriminatory ....
Wish people would get it through their thick skull that discrimination is not a bad thing.
It is not discrimination. It is survival.
A right thinking nation like this might survive.
Hmmm. Slovakia is looking mighty inviting. The Christians are the one’s really suffering in Syria.
Since the Obama administration has been specifically denying non-Muslims (like the Kurdish Yazidis) I am glad to hear there are countries who are practicing the opposite behavior.
God Bless Slovakia!!! and their instinct for self-preservation!
To all the lib’s out there who are mighty upset about Slovakia’s stance: Try this experiment. Go to an American Indian reservation. Try to buy some prime property there. Demand to be allowed to join the Tribe, and be added to the Tribe’s roles.
You will politely (or maybe not so politely) be shown the door. The Tribes are all about maintaining their heritage. Why shouldn’t Slovakia be allowed to do the same?
I have an Iranian mooselimb living next door to me.
Do i trust his lazy ass?
Hell no.
I am serious about him being one lazy person.
Would i prefer some Christian instead?
Of course.
It is smart. It is self-preservation.
a world without Christians..... what would it be like?..
...
..wait that’s where we are headed!!!!
(we know what a country is like)
Will Saudi Arabia accept Christian refugees (even though we all know they’d be nuts to go there)? Until the Saudis make that announcement, STFU Babar.
Considering the problems the French, British and Dutch are having, why would they allow muslims?
They are clannish and seem to go on welfare, taking rather than contributing.
And their violence is a demonstrated fact. It would be like inviting Cousin Eddie into your home, if he had a rap sheet with a dozen assaults.
Good for Slovakia.
BTW went to Bratislava this summer, it was great. All the amenities of a European capital, but not too big.
Why is “discrimination” such aa bad thing, anyway? Nobody feels insulted or belittled when they are told they have “discriminating” tastes in music, art, or food
It used to be that having a discriminating taste was a good thing, even when it came to people.
The funniest thing about that was about that same time one of our bombs hit a factory in Iraq and everyone was screaming about how we blew up a "medicine" factory.
I don’t consider it to be discriminatory to refuse to take a serial killer into your home.
