Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday returned the mandate to form a government to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Erdogan received Davutoglu at 7.30 p.m. local (1630 GMT) at the Presidential Palace in capital Ankara, according to the news agency.

Davutoglu, who is also the chairman of the Justice and Development (AK) Party, told Erdogan that despite his best efforts he could not find any possibility to form a coalition government.

The president thanked the prime minister for his efforts, a statement from the Turkish presidency added.

Erdogan is now expected to make a decision about the early election soon.

Davutoglu had said on Monday that no agreement was reached at a last-ditch meeting with a nationalist party to form a coalition alliance, leaving Turkey with little option but to hold new elections.

I fear the Erdogan will call new elections and do whatever is necessary to make sure the Kurds don’t surprise him again and don’t get represented in the new government.

It gets even uglier from here on out.

This is exactly what Erdogan wanted. A long delay in attempting to form a new government which would fail. Then followed by another election. This time, the fix will be in place - scare tactics and vote rigging in order for Erdogan’s party to win a majority. Once that happens, the Turks can really kiss democracy goodbye, and Turkey will become an Islamic state headed by an Islamic dictator.

Yesterday, I read a very disturbing article on “Commentary” magazine's daily email.

Erdogan is clearly trying to use the current electoral stalemate to seize near-dictatorial powers over Turkey's parliament.

Shockingly (to me, anyway), I learned that Turkey has had four coups d’état since 1960.

Basically, I was just familiar with the often-praised “secular” (rather than Muslim) nature of Turkey's government.

Apparently, Erdogan, who has become an undisguised and unapologetic Islamist leader, has learned the lesson of Turkey's political history.

The previous four coups were all led, or ended, by a truly secular military.

Erdogan has purged the current military leadership multiple times, and no one is confident the military will do anything to stop Erdogan’s power grab.

Please recall that the Islamist Erdogan has been repeatedly touted as Barack Obama’s closest personal friend among current world leaders!

Yup. Nice hand we’ve been dealt. Nothing for it but to play it.
