Moreland Farmers Pantry is closing a year after gay marriage controversy

Just a little more than a year after it opened, the Moreland Farmers Pantry is closing.

Residents of Portland's Westmoreland neighborhood were originally excited for the arrival of a 5,000-square-foot store stocked -- as it advertised -- with non-genetically modified products. But excitement turned to anger for some after comments on the owner's personal Facebook page were made public.

In a 2013 post by owner Chauncy Childs, operating under a pseudonym, she said that although she doesn't judge gay people or their desire to be married, and it isn't her place to form opinions about their lifestyle, she thought gay marriage would cause our civilization to "disintegrate because we are abandoning our principles as a society."

According to a July 2014 KOIN-TV article, business at the store was slow after it opened, possibly because of a boycott. Meanwhile, the owners – Childs and her husband John Childs – tried to make it clear that their personal views as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wouldn't affect how they ran their store.

The market also hired gay workers: "I'm gay and I work at Moreland Farmers Pantry," wrote a woman in the Portland Mercury's I, Anonymous blog. She said she and her co-workers, some of whom were also gay, were tired of people shouting obscenities at the store, accusing them of being homophobes.

Reaction to the grocer's looming closure has been varied. Some were ecstatic: One Facebook user wrote, "This is so freaking awesome. Bigotry doesn't sell in Portland." Others were disappointed: "I am so so sad to see that things have come to a close at MFP. I hope everyone who boycotted the store realizes how much they did for gay rights (notice the sarcasm)."

I found an article from about a year ago. Tell me if this line isn’t a kick in the pants:

“They’re choosing to open a business in a very open-minded neighborhood,” said Tom Brown, owner of Brown Properties and president of the Sellwood Moreland Business Alliance. “I think their personal views are going to hurt.””

The irony would be delicious, if it weren’t so prophetic of what happened to these poor folks.

That’ll teach’em to express their opinions like this is a free country. [/sarc]

There is no research evidence that links genetically modified food with medical problems. Quite the opposite is true. This leaves open the strange nature of a store opened to appeal to flat earthers whose owners are morally opposed to the life style of their customer base. They deserve to close.

they should move to a location that would protect their ability to live by their religious beliefs.

oh wait....

(the irony of my statement is totally lost on the AMERICAN left)

so when do we start our own sanctuary state? one that protects the beliefs of the people and allows them to live their life according to His laws?

The only answer is to open up a all-GMO grocery store in the same space, see how the a-holes in Portland like that.

A damn shame there aren’t enough free thinkers and Christians to keep a business with moral owners in business.

Nice off topic attempt at a thread hijack. Your opinions about GMO's are not the subject here. And how exactly are homosexuals the designated customer base for a natural food store?

Oh that's right, only in your imagination. Oh, and thanks for letting us know you side with the tolerance Nazis on this and that you are happy these people are losing their business.

Just consider, it’s not even against the law (yet) to morally oppose the sodomites, but it is illegal to allow illegal aliens to live in the US and receive “benefits”. But look who is getting punished.

Well, would you want to shop somewhere that you knew the food had been handled by homos? No wonder it failed.

They were catering to the church of NO-GMO, which like it or not overlaps with the church of abortion, homosexual marriage and other well known free thinkers and people accepting of alternative opinions.

Perhaps they have a fondness for fudge fresh out of the oven?

Please offer some evidence for that statement that is not solely your opinion.

It's the Pacific Northwest. It's been invaded by, and conquered by filth from kalifornia. Too bad too. I like Oregon.

I don’t understand your sarcastic comment about this being a free country, As far as I can see, nobody’s freedom was restricted.

Someone opens a business. They are absolutely free to state their opinions. Any potential customers are free to express their position as to the opinions of the owners by shopping or not shopping there. The fact that owners with that opinion opening a store in that neighborhood was not the smartest thing they could do has nothing to do with freedom. Everybody was free to do what they did. The right to freedom does not infer the right to be protected from the results of stupid decisions or acts.
