My guess is they moved the server data to another server that was not accessible online. That way they could start using the online server for other purposes. Might have just been rented. They still have the server data. They were just storing somewhere before archiving it in case customer wanted data back. The reason the reporter obfuscated the wording was so people would think data is gone.

If any classified e-mail went through that server, it is a crime, and it is a crime to have erased the evidence.
