I graduated with a master’s degree from U of Iowa. I know first hand, Iowans are way above average. I was very impressed with the intelligence of so many students and professors I met there.

You are an astute observer.

I hear that criticism sometimes and I just don’t get it. I don’t think he comes off as scripted at all. Fiorina is an example of a candidate who sounds programmed, scripted and memorized to me. Cruz spoke for hours in his filibuster of Obamacare. He wasn’t working off a script. Everyone says in his appearances he doesn’t use notecards or teleprompters. He speaks extemporaneously.

I don’t know if people just don’t understand the words he’s using because they’re too big or his ideas are too complex and people translate that as thinking he’s “preaching” or talking down to them.

For Carson, the nice guy in the race, it will be policy questions. He’s a surgeon and great one. I just don’t think you can master all the elements of policy required to defeat Cruz or even Rubio in a real debate. Time will tell on that.

And then there is the money that it takes to stay afloat.

That leaves Walker, Bush and Rubio. Time will tell on those but right now Rubio is on the rise and Walker and Bush seem to be fading.

So we have Trump at the top, Cruz potentially moving into 2nd place and Walker, Bush and Rubio as question marks and Fiorina and Carson expected to fade.

Why is Carson expected to fade? In this anti-politician environment Rubio, Cruz and Paul are seen as the establishment and that is a tough one to take for conservatives who know his bona fides, not those that don’t follow politics closely. All they’ll hear is Ted Cruz shut down the government and while that appeals to conservatives to stop out of control spending, etc., most voters think that is bad and obstructionist. For Cruz to still be behind Carson at this point is very strange with exception that Trump, Carson and Fiorina are all looked at as outsiders and the electorate as a whole, not just conservatives, are very anti-establishment so far this cycle.

I’m pretty sure Trump is getting the bulk of the Ron Paul vote. If you liked Ron Paul because he was a cranky old gadfly who criticized everyone yet had no record of ever actually solving problems as an elected official, Trump is your natural choice now.

The problem with Cruz is that he comes off as scripted at times (even though I know he’s not)- like televangelist. That works well for some, but for the general electorate, it’s a put-off.

Agreed. Hence Cruz still being in single digits and Carson being up six points on him after the debate. Perhaps with more opportunity to answer in the next debate.

But the universities mostly school out of state students.

I know lots of Iowa State engineering grads.

In my engineering college, it was mostly Iowans,
plus a chunk of foreign students.

When Carson talks, it is always in a soothing tone of voice. He does not sound like he is preaching. That is why he is resonating with voters. JMHO.

I don’t want to hear Cruz talk in a soothing tone of voice to Obama. I want him to tell Obama and Clinton they’re wrong in no uncertain terms. E.g., until Obama calls radical Islamist terrorists by name he won’t defeat them. That’s what he does and I don’t know why that would turn anybody off unless they were a Democrat.

That’s what is great about FR, everyone has an opinion or feeling and wants to share.

So here’s some from me.

I hold Dr. Carson in very high regard. He’s brilliant in his field and seems to be a man of deep faith.

Aside from some very serious optic and audio qualities that may be a big drag, my question is who is advising him now aside from professional political campaigners? From totally outside the political world how does he judge the necessary staff members he needs out of the gate. Who has he already picked to do the evaluation of possible names for staff and cabinet positions? Not trivial questions as there are plenty of smooth talking jackals just itching to take the job of molding him. Sure, all nuerosurgeons have a strong command prescence in the OR. But that’s based on his personal knowledge base. He has little or none in the political sphere.

I hope he has a good run but....

Never once have I heard Cruz point at the audience and tell them what they should or should not be doing. So if someone can explain who he’s been preaching to that has turned anyone off, I’d like to hear it.

You're right he would be the natural choice because: Cruz is elected and he has "no record of ever actually solving problems as an elected official"...All he knows is debate.

He has no charisma. Most people aren't going to have the opportunity to be mesmerized by him at a photo shoot.

Cruz just needs to hold course until the field narrows down sufficiently that the candidates get more speaking time in debates. Once it gets down to two or three candidates, people are going to find out how great a president Cruz will be.

Trump 22, Carson 14, Walker 9, Cruz 8, Fiorina 7

This shows there's 78% out there who don't favor Trump.

Iowa is not a winner take all state. Look who will be sharing the delegates and how they might come together as a final team

Iowa matters much more than its delegate count. It’s a huge first victory for the winner.
