You’re spot on South40. I paraphrase the old saw: “As goes Seattle so goes the state” because it has proven itself out so many times.

I live about 40 miles from Seattle and never go there unless absolutely necessary. I monitor the lunacy from a safe distance and observe how it splashes out onto us in the hinterlands.

Besides the immediate job losses I’m already seeing the unintended consequence of pay parity (”I should be entitled to a 68% pay raise too!”). Nothing good will come from this.

Interestingly, those running my city who claim to be conservative have governed like liberals. Tax increases, outright banishment of cigarette use in public places, sales of cigarettes to anyone under 21 is banned, AND people who smoke (I don't) cannot smoke in their own home should it be an apartment; no smoking is allowed in multiple family housing. They even banned unopened alcohol containers in public parks. So if someone should walk to their local 7-11 and purchase a 6-pak, they would be breaking the law were they to take a shortcut through a park on their way home.

In light of all this insanity I do believe one thing is certain, this $15 garbage won't pass.

Mrs.40 is a retired teacher. She has 3 college degrees and worked in the trade for 35 years. She earned what she made. But from what I know of some others, they clearly do not.

Those who have no ambition in life other than to play games or do their dope dreamed of a $15.00 per hour pay rate. They could buy more games and get more dope.

They never even dreamed that there was this thing in business called “the law of supply and demand.”

These stupid workers also did not realize that when their wages rose from about $10.00 per hour to $15.00 per hour their social security matching by the employer also went up 150%. Not only that, all insurances based upon payroll (unemployment etc...) went up.

After the minimum wage was granted the business owners had to raise their entire menu prices to maintain the other thing these ignorant people never heard of which is called THE PROFIT MARGIN. The profit margin has to be maintained to pay all of the business overhead (food, utilities, maintenance, taxes...etc) and still maintain the same income for the owner/franchisee.

Now, back to “supply and demand.” At first there is a very good supply of product to sell. However, with a large increase in the cost of employees the cost of the finished product has risen to the point of resentment by the public which is the demand. The business sells less product at a higher sale price but makes less profit and eventually is forced to reduce the overhead...the most expensive is...employees.

THEY WANTED IT, THEY GOT IT, QUIT BITCHING ABOUT THE PAYCHECK THAT WAS NOT AS LARGE AS YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE AND WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR JOB JUST TAKE IT LIKE A SOLDIER SACRIFICING HIMSELF ON THE BATTLE LINE. It’s for the good of all you know.

Since they know so much about all kinds of things.

Its not their fault in their minds......its because of Republicans like the president said.

I smelled BS a mile away. A good waitress or bartender at a high end restaurant makes a LOT more than $11 per hour in tips.

**********************************************************************

My 14 year old son worked as a week end waiter at Steak and Shake, He made $100 and more in tips for an 8 hour shift. That was 1989-1990

In May, suddenly, for no apparent reason, Seattle restaurant owners became mean and greedy. Either that or the minimum wage was raised.

Those payroll taxes you mention (especially Social Security, Medicare) were a big reason for Dems to get behind these minimum wage increases - they would take more money from employers/shareholders to fund entitlements. They also converted many unskilled workers (those that kept their jobs) into income tax payers.

Those stinking restaurateurs, why do they fire people? If only government would step in and stop this!

I don’t know what the reason for the job loss is, but the $15 rate won’t even kick in for several more years - it’s being phased in. I think the current rate is about $12.00.

Years ago the Seattle voters voted twice not to build new sports stadiums, but nevertheless the city council overrode the voters and confiscated the money.

They put an extra tax on the downtown restaurants, claiming that they would make more money due to having big game days. Of course many of the mom and pop sandwich shops were nowhere near the stadiums and relied on the working crowd lunch business. Office workers, delivery people, secretaries. Sandwiches went up about a buck all across the board to be paid not by the sports fans but by those who make a living downtown.

Now the little shops are burdened with this minimum wage raise. So in reality the little entrepreneurs and the office clerks end up funding the so-called utopias of the elite socialists. More folks will end up brown bagging it for their downtown lunches.
