...Pongsak Sriboonpeng was sentenced to 60 years - 10 for each message - but his prison term was halved after he admitted to wrongdoing, according to watchdog group iLaw.

A mother-of-two from the northern Chiang Mai province also pleaded guilty to posting offensive comments and had her sentenced to 28 years.

The exact details of what they said - or who they sent the messages to - has not been disclosed.....

Those accused of defaming, insulting or threatening the monarchy face prison terms ranging from three to 15 years on each count.

Sriboopeng's trial was conducted behind closed door because 'what he wrote was beyond rude', Bangkok Military Court's chief judge said.

Major General Panomthep Wesaratchanun added that 'even the prosecutor did not want to read them out loud'.

Thailand's citizens supposedly revere King Bhumibol Adulayadejl, 87, as a moral authority who stepped in repeatedly over the years to unify the country - despite not having a formal political role.....

No kidding. They'll give the prosecutor 15 years for daring to utter the insults.

The Left would, of course, love to have this done to anyway who dared criticize El Jefe Obama.

if you think this is bad , wait until revered King Bhumipol Aduyjadej passes away and the monarchy goes to his son , Crown Prince Vajralongkorn (sp?) , better know as Fah Chai .
With a long and sordid/spotty history and lots of unseemly rumors about his character and involvement in all sorts of intrigue and controversy , for years and years .... As much loved as his father , Phra Nai Luang is , he is roundly disliked by the great multitude of rank & file Thai . They will have to arrest half the country for saying ‘unkind’ things about him ( on social media ) Now if royal succession were to go to one of the daughters ( the Crown Princesses ) it wouldn’t much of an issue , but Fah Chai ..... prepare to see Lese Majest to be the most commonly proffered charge

Isn’t there a younger Thai Prince that was disinherited for marrying a German woman?

“sending people to jail for this... insane”

Before the age of seven children can’t think logically. They think magically. If dad dies, for example, it was their magical thinking that killed him.

I’ve seen this magical thinking in adults raised in poor countries. If you ask some African men how tall their son is they’ll hold their hand at a particular height but keep it perpendicular to the ground so as not to stunt their child’s growth. Talk at length to a “Palestinian” and your head will spin at their illogic. In a culture like this what people say can, the listener of the same culture thinks, affect the reality around them. Words that may negatively affect that reality must, therefore, be punished so others know not to say them.

First thing I was instructed about, upon arriving at U-Tapao Royal Thai Naval Airfield, Rayong province, was to never exercise your American freedom of speech concerning the Thai King and Queen, other than to say that ‘they look nice’.

It is not only Thai law, but even so the Royals are in the same construct of an English parliamentary system, but there, the People hold them in severe regards. The folks would just as soon slit your throat, as to turn you over to the national police, and being an American serviceman, meant nothing. No embassy could get you out of a Thai jail.

Many, many years ago I knew the king. He was a nice guy. I was also friendly with his oldest daughter, the then Crown Princess. She was a sweet girl, married an American but the marriage failed. She had several children, one of whom had autism. He was killed in the tsunami which hit Thailand some years back.

Foreign "civilized" countries express horror at the "savage" Americans with their guns and high body counts but throw people into prison for uttering words. That goes for "civilized " Europe as well. A number of the Euro countries throw people into prison for "hate crimes" of speech i.e. criticizing Islam.

We're not quite there yet (American leftists don't quite have that power for now), and we might get there. But we're NOT!!! there yet.

So while the petty foreign fascists criticize us for our uncouth ways, remind them of the people they throw into prison for speaking their minds.

The Thai government enforces reverence for their king like he was Kim Jong-Un, yet their country is the sex tourism capital of the world.

Strange.
