GOP debate contenders give Democrats reason to worry
The Washington Post ^ | 07 Aug 2015 | Dan Balz

Donald Trump may top the polls in the contest for the Republican presidential nomination, but Thursday’s debate was a reminder that the party has able rivals who eventually could taken him down — and who also could mount a stiff challenge to Hillary Rodham Clinton in the general election.

Trump performed in typical style in the two-hour debate — the same style that has helped him blow past the other candidates. But as the campaigns broke camp here Friday morning, the smiles on the faces of other candidates’ advisers told the fuller story of what happened on the stage at the Quicken Arena.

Everyone came out a winner — or so the rivals’ advisers proclaimed. Some of that bravado was typical post-debate hype, but some of it was grounded in reality. Trump may have been the center of attention, but others performed as or more effectively overall and probably helped themselves with Republican voters who are beginning to sort through their choices.

For months, Republican leaders have talked about the depth and potential strength of their candidates. As a group, the aspiring nominees are certainly more experienced and seemingly more ready for a national campaign than the collection of politicians who sought to deny Mitt Romney the GOP nomination in 2012.

Democrats have enjoyed the summer of Trump and hope it lasts long enough to inflict serious damage on the Republican brand. But they no doubt saw enough Thursday night to begin to worry about what a general election pitting a vulnerable Clinton against one of the non-Trumps could portend.

These people are delusional.

Article working under the assumption that Trump will not be the nominee. A few weeks ago I’d have agreed. Now? Not so sure.

The Drudge poll is about as unscientific and useless as it gets. “Republican Base Voters”? Where does that come from? It’s a web-based poll. Anyone could vote on the Drudge poll. And, until this morning at least, anyone could vote multiple times.

Trump was awful...long, rambling answers that drifted off in the weeds, non sequiturs, irrelevancies, inability to answer questions succinctly and forcefully, not well informed, even in his own areas of expertise. The bankruptcy question to him was a softball and he could have discussed the role of bankruptcy in American business and how it ultimately strengthens businesses or drives the weak out of the market. Instead he got personally defensive rather than taking the rich opportunity to extol the virtues of capitalism. Calling out his lenders as mean guys was a stupid remark. He could have deflected it by talking about the role of risk capital and business creation.

He was an embarrassment and shouldn’t be on the same stage with the others.

It wasn’t doing that late last night, though. I tested it, and had multiple votes register in a row, with a static IP address.

I'm curious who you voted for multiple times in the Drudge poll. Would you share that info...?

LOL, you think a web poll means anything? It means nothing. It’s as unscientific as it gets.

Trump probably tweeted it out to his followers. They could be foreigners or otherwise ineligible to vote in primaries.

Yeah, it's very clear Trump won the vote despite the little Con yappers.

That explains those 227 votes for Jeb Bush. I don’t think your boy is going to make it very far though.

He simply doesn’t have presidential abilities or temperament. To himself.

Well said. Trump also doesn’t have the temperament for the office, either. He was in defensive mode with every single question.

Trump's style clearly frightens you (or maybe annoys you). Why is that? Are you afraid or concerned that he might win the nomination? I figure that's unlikely as he will probably become bored with the whole thing before long ... he has other, more important things to tend to.

In the meantime, I love what Trump is doing ... the impact he is having to the electoral process. Trump is giving courage (or providing cover, if you prefer) to the other candidates and he is demonstrating clearly, consistently and persistently the incompatibility of political calculations (made by professional politicians) with candor and honesty ... he's throwing them off their game and I respect and appreciate that!

Let's see what happens when the scientific polls come out. I suspect the Drudge numbers are skewed partly for the reasons which you mentioned, but even more so because more of the Drudge voters actually saw the actual debates.

Are there any numbers out yet on how many actually did?

Who should Trump model himself after? Reagan? Obama? Hitlery? Jeb?
