The man leading the GOP primary polls made it clear on Thursday night that he still has a high opinion of health care systems that are to the left of Obamacare.
During the first GOP debate, moderator Bret Baier said to Donald Trump, "15 years ago, you called yourself a liberal on health care. You were for a single-payer system, a Canadian-style system."
"As far as single payer, it works in Canada," Trump replied. "It works incredibly well in Scotland. It could have worked in a different age, which is the age you're talking about here." Trump didn't explain what might have changed in the last 15 years that would prevent the United States from adopting Canadian-style health care.

His entire answer was a bit more fleshed out then that, he talked extensively about removing the state barriers in a health insurance market place. He also stated there would need to be a separate system for those who can afford one. He did not explain what that would be but he has pointed out in the past that everyone should have some form of health care.
I hate the practice of sound bite journalism.
THIS is what will hurt Trump - NOT Megyn Crowley’s shameful attacks!
I believe he said there was a time Single Payer would have worked, but that it wouldn’t work under current economic conditions... Rand Paul didn’t hear him either.
From what I’ve seen socialized medicine doesn’t work well anywhere.
I had a girlfriend in Windsor in a panic because her daughter got bitten by a tick and she was worried about Lyme disease. She couldn’t get an appointment for 6 months so I paid for a doctor here to check her out within 2 days.
The sad part is, the GOP has helped Obamacare implementation and used it as a political football and refused to stop it or defund it as they claimed. They’re very dubious in their actions.
Trump fits right in.
He’s been a celebrity for 30 years. The media probably has storage rooms full of files on Donald Trump that they’ll beat him up with.
Past flirting with presidential runs has just made the media more prepared for him.
From what I can see, Trump needs to stay off the stages, and start his own thing, he does really good when he goes to places and the people really get to meet him and see him...
From what I’ve been told about last night it was a ‘horse and pony show’ and it really was beneath Trump to even be there...actually for any of them to be there, it was really degrading and FNC should be told where the sun doesn’t shine...
In Canada your dog or cat will get an MRI quicker than you.
Unfortunately, unless one lives there, most think this system works for other, smaller countries. My son lived in Denmark for about a year - they have single payer, and even though he is against it here in the U.S., he said it works rather well there due to the smaller population.
I hate idiots who think single payer "works." Trump is a buffoon. He's just regurgitating what he thinks voters want to hear on this.
Having the Single Payer changes your whole mindset about your medical care. Being able to change your doctor if you don’t like him is MUCH, MUCH easier than it is in Canada. This affects how the doctors and the patients treat each other.
Note to Trump.
It does not work. Specialists are sometimes a year or more for an appointment. We don’t complain about it a lot because we have never seen how an efficient system can work.
Don’t follow our model. It’s the epitome of the government runs everything inefficiently.
Yellow journalism equals hit piece.
Weekly Standard being deceptive. Trump is for a private enterprise health system.
Yes, that response was troublesome.
“He’s just regurgitating what he thinks voters want to hear on this.”
He has said, directly, the “conservatives” will have to get over their position about universal health care in prior appearances. That is a direct quote. I don’t think most of us wanted to hear that but he said it directly.
I noted the sound bite was not fully descriptive of his position. I think one needs hear what it was in its entirely to understand what he is saying. He did not say he wants a single payer system. He did say the Canadian System works FOR THEM.
This time Socialism will work!
Canada has admitted it’s system is unsustainable and they have a smaller population to insure than the USA
