Pat Buchanan, a past presidential candidate and co-host of the celebrated "Crossfire" TV debate show, believes that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has the most potential to break out in Thursday's GOP Cleveland clash and is urging Jeb Bush to challenge Donald Trump.
"I think Cruz is one guy that does have potential," said Buchanan on CNBC.
But in one of CNBC Washington correspondent John Harwood's folksy "Speakeasy" dinners, Buchanan ruled out another run.
HARWOOD: Now, we got 17 Republican candidates so far. Jim Gilmore just got in. Now, if he's getting in the race, Pat Buchanan can't be far behind.
BUCHANAN: The spirit is willing but the--the flesh is very weak, John.
Over a dinner, the two discussed the Thursday night GOP debate on Fox and the champion debater has some advice for the field of 10.
For Bush: "If I were Bush, I would challenge Trump directly and politely. I would certainly be ready. I would be ready for the if you will, the sucker punch comin.'"
For Trump: "He's a counterpuncher. He's gonna have to take each of these things where he's been hit. And I think havin' a substantive a short, substantive answer."
On Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker: "I think he's gotta show a measure of gravitas, and also of communication skills in a debate."
For New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: "He's got a tough assignment. I mean, Trump has become the uber-tough guy."
For Sen. Rand Paul: "Come out again as sort of an anti-interventionist against these wars in the Middle East. If I were him, I would distinguish myself that way to try to get back into the mix."
On Cruz: "I think he does Ted Cruz. I think he goes after the Senate majority leader. No, I do think that's him. I think Cruz is one guy that does have potential."
His advice for Sen. Marco Rubio: "The perception of him is a certain callowness and youthfulness. I think he's gotta deal with his own problems rather than the Trump problem."

Oh Pat.. There you go again.
We all know The Donald is the next ‘Reagan’.
I’d settle for a Truman about now..
At least he had the guts to win.. At any cost.
Wait til Pat finds out Cruz isn’t an anti-Semite.
The Honeymoon will be over then.
It’s the only time I’ll say “Go Pat Go!”
On Cruz: “I think he does Ted Cruz. I think he goes after the Senate majority leader. No, I do think that’s him. I think Cruz is one guy that does have potential.”
Can someone translate this into English?
The first time I heard Ted Cruz was the 2012 RNC.
We walked out on the stage and the podium recessed back into the stage. We walked up the edge of the stage and actually started speaking to the crowd and the TV, not AT the crowd and TV.
It wasn’t a canned or rehearsed speech either. It was from the heart and conscience - but unlike some who speak from those areas, he had polish, sincerity and an ability to make himself understood by almost anyone.
I remember thinking “My god, this guy is gonna go far!”
Minor typos in my previous post:
We = He
You may have been brainwashed. Pat is for America first, last and always and that's anti-Semite to some who think we should be in everlasting war.
Pat isn’t an anti-Semite. He does place the interests of his own country first. With others, it more...complicated.
no no, you are completely mistaken. He hates all Jews.
No, he hates Jews.
Go on believing it if you want. There’s not a shred of evidence.
I was going to say,”Wow, this really identifies with Cruz!”
If everything Pat Buchanan has said in his life about his intense detestation of the Jewish people is not enough for you, then take William F. Buckley’s word for it. Pat Buchanan is an anti-Semite.
It’s hard to “prove” what is in someone’s heart, but their words and works can provide convincing evidence.

Bull puckey!
Let me try.
Ted Cruz can do a good impression of himself. Pat heard somewhere that Cruz went after McConnel but he is not sure. Pat confirms Cruz does a good impression of himself. Cruz is the only candidate that has potential.
