U.S. to Defend New Syria Force From Assad Regime

President Barack Obama has authorized using air power to defend a new U.S.-backed fighting force in Syria if it is attacked by Syrian government forces or other groups, raising the risk of the American military coming into direct conflict with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

U.S. officials said the decision ended a monthslong debate over the role the American military should play in supporting its few allies on the battlefield in Syria. Administration officials had been deeply concerned that defending the Pentagon-backed force could inadvertently open the first open conflict with the Assad government, which has denounced the U.S. program.

Though the new rules allow Pentagon strikes to defend the U.S.-allied force against any regime attacks, U.S. military officials played down the chances of a direct confrontation, at least in the near term.

Sounds like a good plan if you want to end up fighting the Russians.

It’s clear that Jarrett has decided that Assad will be deposed before Obama leaves office. ISIS will get their caliphate and Iran will get their nukes.

The rebel force indicated for defense is quite small, and recently suffered significant losses, so a defensive or support airstrike may never be executed.

This may be a trial balloon for US air support of selected Muslim groups in the future.

Assad has some reasonably modern anti aircraft capabilities, and an air campaign against his forces may not be a cakewalk with Iran in a better position now to reinforce Assad.

Pushing ever closer to major hostilities in the ME.

yes and note how there are almost no voices raised against this, just like when he overthrew Egypt’s government to install his muslimBros murderer friends.... just like when he bombed and overthrew the Libyan govt resulting in more murderers getting power there

Congress (which, after all, is the home of the war power anyway) is completely worthless (even in defending its own constitutional authority)

Lindsey Graham aught to be happy.
US force now being used to protect ISIS/Al-Qeada just as he preened and flipped his handkerchief in support of a couple weeks back.

I agree with every word of your post.

This is an alarming development. The people of the US are not in favor of intervention in Syria, and I wish their representatives would speak up for them, against Obama and his reckless push to war.
