Donald Trump says as president he would ultimately give some illegal immigrants legal status and isn't ruling out a pathway to citizenship, CNN reports.
That sounds different than what he said during his June 16 announcement speech when critics say he insulted Mexicans.
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems," he said then. "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
Those who are not committing crimes could find legal status under a Trump administration, he told CNN's Dana Bash in comments aired Wednesday on CNN's "The Situation Room."
"It depends," Trump told Bash. "Look, it sound cold, and it sounds hard. Our country is going to hell. We have to have a system where people are legally in our country."
While Mexico makes it hard for immigrants to enter, Trump said, "With us they walk across, immediately they're members, call them members of our country. It's not right. "
One of Trump's GOP rivals, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, appeared immediately afterward, saying Trump's comments sound a lot like amnesty.

Aww, crap.
He’s always been like that on that issue.
Meanwhile, hardworking, college-educated (often in the US) people from Asia and elsewhere are having to jump through hoops to get into the country LEGALLY, whereas Obama and the RINOs want to let the wrong people cut the line.
zing!
The title is much more extreme than what Trump actually said.
Doesn’t matter what liberal things he says, the only thing that matters is that he gets very angry at dopes in the establishment and the left. Flash not substance is dominating the 2016 primary.
That is the end of that run.
I will not cast a vote for a candidate who will not enforce laws against illegal immigration.
Take the pledge.
Amnesty.
Buckling under the pressure
When will I hear an American politician talk about American families, the need to encourage them, and make them grow?
Is it “an act of love?” There goes the base, like rats leaving a sinking ship! Jeb, McCain, Lindsey, Boehner, Mitch, and all others who despise liberty are very glad to hear this!
How?
Did you read the article? The headline is misleading.
“The title is much more extreme than what Trump actually said.”
What did he say?
I believe you are right.
Sounds like a perfectly acceptable position! If being here illegally is a crime, then the second half is self explanatory.
Not really. Trump said that as long as illegals go home to visit their family he’d “expedite” (that is put them to the front of the line) their being suddenly made legal once they return to the US.
He’s a sellout with amnesty like the other 197 GOP candidates running for president.
exactly, it’s not going to be hard for someone to get to the right of that of that position ...then are people going to open their eyes or just keep them just and keeping yelling
This is not good. I pray that Trump is deliberately or inadvertantly paving the way for Cruz.
