Texas Republican Senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz will make Bartlesville the target of his campaign with an event at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in mid-August, officials have confirmed with the Examiner-Enterprise.
Cruz will be speaking in a joint event with Rep. Jim Bridenstine, R-Okla., from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Lyon Fine Arts Center on the campus of OKWU, located at 2201 Silver Lake Road. The rally is open to the public.
According to Dr. Everett Piper, president of OKWU, the university is excited to host the event.
While Oklahoma Wesleyan University does not endorse a candidate for president, I am eager and pleased to serve as a venue to engage educate our community, Piper told the Examiner-Enterprise on Wednesday. In that respect, I am excited to host this event.
Cruz, a tea party favorite, announced his candidacy for president in March. According to the Washington Post, during his announcement speech he embraced the goals of Christian social conservatives, military hawks and small-government tea partiers and illustrated the broad Republican coalition he is hoping to assemble.
He again made headlines on Friday when he attacked U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on the Senate floor. Cruz accused McConnell of lying and working with Democrats to undermine Republican values. Cruz specifically accused McConnell of lying about a deal to give supporters of the Export-Import Bank an opportunity to revive it in exchange for votes for a trade bill. Cruz also spoke at a pro-life rally on Tuesday in front of the U.S. Capitol, calling on the federal government to defund Planned Parenthood.
Bridenstine is reportedly heading up Cruzs presidential campaign in Oklahoma, and publically endorsed Cruz via an opinion piece on breitbart.com published on July 20.
Multiple phone calls and emails to Cruzs campaign by the Examiner-Enterprise to seek comment about the Bartlesville visit have not been returned. The Aug. 13 rally marks the first time an active presidential candidate has visited Bartlesville.
