Swedish military says divers' wreck find likely Russian submarine that sank in 1916 collision

Sweden says a submarine wreck found last week in its territorial waters was most likely Russian World War I submarine the Som, which sank after colliding with a Swedish ship in 1916.

Swedish Armed Forces spokesman Jesper Tengroth says investigators on Tuesday analyzed video footage provided by the diving company that found the wreck.

Yesterday it was breathlessly reported as "Security consultants say the submarine has not been crashed long, and speculate that it was part of an unsuccessful secret test or mission. “I imagine it has been tested and failed,” said security consultant Joakim von Braun."

Maybe he was right and this is Sweden backwalking the story to make the Russians feel better about losing one of their subs.

In a related news story, the Russian government has demanded the return of their submarine in order to arrest the crew and execute them for crimes against the Soviet Union.
