Township council on Tuesday unanimously agreed to charge businesses that call for police assistance more than 10 times a month or demand an officer respond to a shoplifting incident that doesn't result in an arrest. The fine will be $500, under the ordinance proposal.

Absolute lunacy!
And justifiable homicide will rise as well. Watch the statistics trend.
What the heck is a Pohatcong?
Shoplifters will be shot. New story policy.
Just to keep things in perspective, Jersey has Lopatcong (right next to Pohatcong), which is not to be confused with Hopatcong (a bit further north)...
You want the cop to run out to the store while accidents, stopped-breathing, true malicious crimes, & mayhen reigns and get some idiot manager who then refuses ten times a month not to sign complaints? How about they just call you & the guy above who agrees with you?
Its not enough that the county, state, and federal government taxes the crap out of us. Now the cities want a piece of the action. I guess that will leave us about 25 - 30 % of our income left over to live on after they get through with it.
How about the cops do the jobs they are paid for?
Not so fast... Hard to get a gun in Jersey, that’s one reason I moved to PA years ago...
I don’t think a charge for false alarms is uncommon. And this is after 10?
What form is he supposed to sign when the officer won’t give him a form to sign in order to make it appear the crime rate is lower than it is?
To compound the issue, Greenemeir said many shoplifting cases are not prosecuted because many times the complainant does not show up for court.
If the complainant doesn't show up in court the charges are dismissed. This measure by the Pohatcong municipal government is an attempt to stop retailers from wasting the time and resources of the local police department.
This is really no different than a town levying a fine against a home or business owner whose location is the source of multiple false alarms from fire or burglar alarms.
This practice can be found in other states too.
Indeed. It’s a good idea if there is a serial abuse of police responses. Ten times a month is idiotic. And if the retailer doesn’t like it, then stop letting shop lifters off the hook. Those critical of this should never complain about local taxes again.

Even if guns were as easy to get in New Jersey as they are in Pennsylvania, you can't shoot a thief in New Jersey. You are required to hide from them. (I'm simplifying the NJ law a little. But just a little.)
