Manchin: ‘I need Republican help’ to fix gun sale checks
The Hill ^

One of the Senate’s biggest supporters of firearm background checks is renewing calls for Congress to fix the system in the light of a deadly theater shooting in Lafayette, La.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Sunday that Congress should “shut down the loophole” that allows some mentally ill people, like the Louisiana movie theater shooter, to slip through the government’s system for vetting gun sales.

“Right now, I need Republican help,” said Manchin, a moderate Democrat has led the push to reform background checks.

“I need my friends on the Republican side of the aisle to help us with a most reasonable, sensible path forward,” he said in an appearance with CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

I can only speak to the POS from my state, Toomey. He needs to be primaried, because I will certainly not vote for him again.

Manchin on Sunday reiterated his previous arguments that the legislation on background checks “is not gun control.”

“It’s just saying that, listen, if you go to a gun show, commercial transaction, we need to know who you are and if you’ve had a problem before,” he said.

If Manchin’s idea had existed during the time of the Founding Fathers, every last Founding Father would have been executed by the British with that information.

What he needs is a Republican challenger to remove him from office.

Toomey turned out to be a disappointment, good luck primarying him, we threw out Eric Cantor.

I am curious if the RNC knows the number of people who WILL NOT VOTE for Toomey? Or do they know but do not care?

Those background checks worked so well with this latest movie theater shooter. He failed a background check, but he obtained a gun anyway.

So Manchin’s solution is MORE background checks? Brilliant.

The people of WV are as schzophrenic in their politics as we, in Ohio are. They overwhelmingly vote Republican for President, but, Democrat for governors and senate representatives. Here in Ohio, we go for a DEM for president and vote R for governor. Makes one nuts to try and figure it out. I guess I understand WV somewhat. It’s a poor state, and they know the DEMs will keep the goodies flowing. What they need is business to put money in their pocket. maybe one day, they will figure it out.

I’m surprised that he even felt he had to ask.

"In the light of a deadly theater shooting in Lafayette, La.", we MUST go to MANDATORY "Concealed/Open Carry".
EVERY LAW ABIDING Citizen of Legal AGE MUST start carrying a firearm.
The ONLY THING that will deter criminals IS MORE ARMED Citizens !

YOU are brilliant for making that point. The truth is totally missing from Manchin’s bright idea here.

BTW, where is Manchin and the other Democrats on KATE’s LAW?
The truth is standing up and out, plain and simple enough on that law. Let’s trade the real against the unreal, Manchin.

Now that we know the Senate is nothing but poker bets, let us see some cooperation on KATE’S LAW.

How 'bout making gov't workers who screw up the background checks that result in a prohibited individual buying a firearm that results in the death of a victim criminally liable? That might make background checks more accurate!

Requiring that mental hospital commitments are reported to NICS, but prohibiting that the report itself is obviously the flaw that is of Congress's own making.

Asking - in effect -"are you crazy?" (question 11.f) on the NICS form and then relying on the crazy person's accuracy and truthfulness isn't ever going to work because the information isn't verifiable .

Manchin is attempting to ingratiate himself with Obama, who is seen whining this week that he will be chasing more gun control on his way out of office.

He’ll probably get it.

We’ve needed Republican help to be Republicans, and have not got far.

May as well let Republicans do what they do best....be Democrat butt boys.

So bend over Repubs, get ready to be Dorkbama’d again.

Oh, that next election....feggedabowdit.

Yep. We can save ourselves a lot of frustration and angst by always expecting the worst from the GOP, because that’s all we’re going to get. We can rid ourselves of any remaining stress by refusing to ever vote for this lot again.

Right. Meanwhile the “loophole” at the southern border and the anchor baby “loophole” continues to destroy American culture and lives everyday.

Talk about having screwed up priorities. Besides; there is already a background check in effect. It has been shown over and over again that more draconian background checks would not have made a difference in any of these crazies getting guns. Never has never will.

These anti-gun nuts need to get off their damn high horse and let us protect ourselves with our God given rights and those written into the Constitution for very good reason.

He should ask McConnell, I’m sure he would be glad to help his good friends across the aisle.
