Cruz girds for McConnell showdown in rare Sunday session

Sen. Ted Cruz has found a way to seize the spotlight at a time his campaign for president is losing the battle for buzz.

The Texas Republican on Sunday will attempt an unusual procedural move to overturn Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) blocking of his amendment on the Iran nuclear deal.

McConnell, seeking to move a federal highway funding bill through the Senate fast, has cut off most amendments to the measure — though he is allowing a vote on reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank.

That decision has infuriated Cruz, who took to the floor on Friday to accuse his leader of lying to him.

On Sunday, Cruz needs a majority of the Senate to back his objection to McConnell — a tall order that is unlikely to be achieved.

Either way, it could be good news for Cruz, who wants to cast himself as a fighter struggling against the Washington establishment.

Republican strategists say the floor battle gives Cruz a vital shot of publicity at a time his campaign is being overshadowed by celebrity business mogul Donald Trump, who has soared to the top of GOP polls as Cruz has lost support.

A recent Washington Post/ABC news poll showed Trump leading the GOP presidential field nationwide with 24 percent support. It showed Cruz in eighth place with 4 percent.

“For someone trying to run for a president as a populist outsider and Trump sucking all the oxygen out of the room, this couldn’t come at a better time,” Ford O’Connell, a GOP strategist who worked on Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign.

Everyone on the left and right; is sick of the “corrupt old bastards” as Sarah Palin called them.

As Cruz said, it is government of the lobbyists; by the lobbyists; and for the lobbyists.

Ahhhhh. So this is one big political ploy, eh, Ford?

Say, Ford, what is Juan McCainez's view on ramming through a highway spending bill without allowing amendments? Oh. Wait. McCainez is not running for Presidente so he doesn't give a flying fig.

Thank God for giving the Founding Fathers the idea of holding regular elections.

Sen. Ted Cruz has found a way to seize the spotlight . . .

It's conceivable that Cruz is doing this maneuver because he thinks it's the right thing to do and the best way to do it.

I suppose it's also conceivable to write a news story, rather than a partisan screed aimed at someone you envy for being smarter than you.

Which reminds me—who the heck is Alexander Bolton?

I saw something earlier that showed Cruz at 4%.

Unless I missed something major, I don’t see how that can be.

I’ve done plenty of my own research and I find Ted Cruz has a long history of doing the right thing even when nobody was watching.

I’m starting to understand why Palin didn’t stay at fox. Fox has not covered Cruz—have you noticed?

The procedural posture is summed up with this exchange of Friday, the 24th:

Accordingly, Madam President, I call up my amendment No. 2301 to the McConnell amendment No. 2266, as modified.

The PRESIDING OFFICER. The amendment is not in order to be offered, as it is inconsistent with the Senate's precedents with respect to the offering of amendments, their number, degree, and kind.

APPEAL OF THE RULING OF THE CHAIR.

Mr. CRUZ. Madam President, I appeal the ruling of the Chair that the amendment is not in order.

The PRESIDING OFFICER. The appeal is debatable.

Mr. CRUZ. Madam President, I suggest the absence of a quorum.

So, first there is a debate on whether or not the amendment is in order.

Amendment 2301 inserts two conditions on lifting sanctions against Iran. One condition is that the Government of Iran must recognize Israel's right to exist, the other is that Iran must release all Americans unjustly held in Iranian jails.

Senate procedure is arcane, to say the least, but it's my understanding that Cruz will raise the contents of Rule XIV, which provides that amendments are in order at any time before the third reading of a bill.

The Hill's assumption -- that Cruz's effort is "a tall order that is unlikely to be achieved" -- is a very low (and very sad) opinion of the members of the U.S. Senate -- both Right and Left -- who would not hold mcconnell accountable even though he lied to their faces.

Then again, it's not surprising because truth, candor and honor have no place in the "political calculations" of nearly all "professional politicians".

Unless I missed something major, I don’t see how that can be.

And yet Cruz is the second top fundraiser, behind bush! despite Ted's support coming from mostly grassroots, while the 'tard! is getting it all from country club cronycrats.

There are more Cruz supporters than the media push polls are indicating.

Cruz wants McConnell to allow an amendment that would keep sanctions on Iran until Tehran recognizes Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and frees four American hostages.

This is an awesome amendment. Go Cruz!

In a sane Senate (yeah, I know, what am I thinking?), both of those amendments ought to be allowed and approved.

It infuriates me how the MSM frames Cruz’s actions, as if he’s cynically doing this to regain the media spotlight. What he’s doing is making for him powerful enemies and could destroy his career as a politician, no one does that for cynical purposes of campaigning.

Thank you Sequoyah101.

Despite all the media gloom and doom about the likely defeat of the Cruz amendments, I’m interested in seeing if McConnell takes the floor to address his nature to lie; to Republican Senators in caucus, and to the American people when he said amendments would be liberal allowed under his leadership.

I’m hopeful that TC will pull a reprise from David and Goliath and accomplish a great task. My prayers are with him, and for his never losing confidence in the rightness of his position.

...despite Ted's support coming from mostly grassroots...

Not true. Cruz is getting millions from special interests like the billionaire fracking brothers in Texas...$15 million.

Ted is very beholden to big money.

Cruz has hundreds of thousands of grassroots supporters that have contributed to his campaign, more than any other candidate. Jeb is 97% Pac Money.
