WASHINGTON The 11 million Americans who receive Social Security disability benefits face steep cuts next year, the government said on Wednesday.
The trustees who oversee Social Security and Medicare said the disability trust fund will run out of money in late 2016. That would trigger an automatic 19 percent cut in benefits, unless Congress acts.
The average monthly benefit for disabled workers and their families is $1,017. The typical beneficiary would receive $193 less per month.
In more bad news for beneficiaries, the trustees project that there will be no cost-of-living increase in benefits at the end of the year. It would mark only the third year without an increase since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.
Separately, about 7 million Medicare beneficiaries could face a monthly premium increase of at least $54 for outpatient coverage. That works out to an increase of more than 50 percent.
The annual report card on the financial health of Social Security and Medicare shows that the federal governments largest benefit programs are feeling the strain of aging baby boomers as both approach milestone anniversaries.

For those who are gold-bricking the system this might force them back to work...
Coming up on an election year, nobody is going to get a SS cut.
The majority are able-bodied and should go get work.
No problem for the sleazy lawyers that have already pocketed their take on the fraudulent claimants. They got their cut at the outset.
Not fair!
This another ‘made for Trump’ issue. one that he’s already touched on.
Not fair.
And speaking of trigger, I need to buy some ammo. Because if they cut SS benefits, we're gonna need it.
“unless Congress acts”
Yup, just pile more money on it. This is why govt should get out of the charity business. Costs go way out of control.
I do believe, however, that paying for vets is a different story, as they put their life on the line for the country, even if they didn’t actually wind up in combat.
No, they won’t be.
This is a standard Democrat “gin up the turnout” operation.
Granted it’s starting up a bit early.
I wonder if “O’s” low information supporters will riot over THIS!
They can thank HIM for putting them in THIS jackpot!
But it will harm those who are truly disabled. Better to catch the gold-brickers and collect restitution from them, or put them busy working it off, than to cut benefits overall.
And yes, I know; the constitution does not authorize enforced charity at the expense of the taxpayers, and it is wrong to use it. But that's the law we're stuck with until we correct the situation.
If Obama is trying to say the next president could be on vacation all of his time “the job i have done it” he can go to hell
Plenty of money for wetbacks and jihadis!
I understand a huge number on disabilities are covered because of fraudulent claims of injuries certified by dishonest doctors. IMO all who receive this benefit need to be recertified every five years or so by a doctor other than the original one.
We all know the Pubbies are going to cave and run for the tall grass before the cuts happen and the Poor Sucker from South Succotash stories start hitting the nightly news.
These scare articles show up every few years.
They are BS.
Congress will vote the funds. After all, they just need the Treasury to turn on the money printers and sell the debt to China or Japan or Germany or some other nation. If that fails, they can get phony Monopoly money from Parker Bros.
If they got rid of the disability fraudsters, they’d probably have enough to fund the truly disabled.
I visited my local SSA office a while back. I was the only older person there. The waiting room was rife with young slugs texting and playing with their phones. All had some sort of “disability.” Lack of brains and ambition.
SSDI will be saved as it has been 11 times before by shifting T-bills from the SSTF into the DI Trust Fund.
