With all the fire coming at Donald Trump since his comments this weekend against Sen. John McCain – one of the leaders of New York’s Vietnam Veterans Plaza tells ABC News Trump “has not been a bad guy to us.”
Vincent McGowan, who has been with the organization since its inception in 1983 and currently sits on its board, says that if it wasn’t for Trump, the project in lower Manhattan would have never happened. McGowan says the property downtown was gifted to the veterans by the Koch administration but they had no money. Trump committed $1M in a matching fund and they “couldn’t have built it without him.”

McGowan confirmed his organization has turned to Trump several times over the years. In 1995, the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII, the group asked for the Donald’s support for their parade. Trump gave the group $175,000 and allowed organizers to use his helicopter to get around the different parts of the city quickly. “He’s like a guy from the corner who made out well,” says McGowan who added the organization honored Trump in 2005 as their Friend of the Year.
McGowan recalled a particular experience a few years back, a staff sergeant had just retired after 10 years of service, wanted to see New York but was down on his luck. McGowan called Trump who gave the veteran a tour of Trump Tower, took him for lunch and then handed him a check for $10,000 to jump start his education.

Trump did not attack veterans. He attacked Sen. John McCain. If McCain is not man enough to defend himself, then he should resign.

There is an ABC news clip over there that lofts the question if this should be the end of the Trump bid.
They come up with the premise, then ponder at length if he should end his run or not. New clips saying he is universally condemned for his comments are presented. No he isn’t.
John McCain responded by saying Trump should apologize to veterans and their families.
Yep, John McCain suggesting someone else apologize to veterans and their families..., the man has no shame whatsoever.
Great play! Very encouraged to see the veterans start to come out and defend Trump. A great beginning to the week of media hysteria. This would include FOX NEWS, who has barely been a help to truth and accuracy on this hype.
Veterans can best undo any damage to Trump on the subject of McCain and the word “hero”, when ever used in the same sentence.
We can object into the wind, but the veterans are the object of the totally media created offense here.

Not all vets will support Trump. Remember the veterans standing on the stage with Kerry. I don’t understand them. I’m a vet and I despise both of them.
Where are the Trump haters that want to pretend Trump doesn’t care for vets? Where is proof of equivalent pro-vet actions by other GOP candidates?
You certainly have a point. A few contrarians I think I already did hear about.
Thankfully, there has been no veteran pile on against Trump in this particular case where McCain is involved. I think the context where his remark was injected is something most people can accept. And again thankfully, there is video of how benign his words were, in the context of what Trump was complaining about.
I never claimed he didn't care for vets or he didn't. I think everything he does is self serving. But so far, I see nothing to make him stand out as pro-vet.

Okay, what pro-vet action did Trump take? I didn't hear about any. As far as other candidates, I don't know that much one way or another. But I would have to imagine in 14 GOP candidates, there is some.
You obviously didn’t read the article about his personal gestures towards vets.
Nor apparently are you aware that the USMC has honored him for his support...which is not in this particular article but others.

Two of the Viet vets on the stage at the Democratic National Convention with Kerry DID NOT SERVE with him as they claimed. They lied and it took many years to get a confession out of them (that was not widely reported in the MSM). Alston and the other fellow both suffered serious enough wounds (Alston, head), to be sent to a major trauma field hospital in the Delta before being sent to Japan for further treatment, all before Kerry took over command of PC 94.
The rest of his crew was either against him or declined to make any statement.
Kerry’s Viet vet aide Wade Sanders went to jail for about 5 years on a child pornography charge.
Most vets don’t like Kerry and many just plain hate him for his self-promotion and lies.
They rest of us don’t like him because he’s a damned traitor.
Put me in the “rest of us” category.
Well, Nick, he said he supported Veterans...that is enough for the Trump people.
Oh, and no other candidates either love America or are pro-Vet...it can only be Trump.
Remember, we have so-called Conservatives on this site who support a man who isn’t Conservative. Don’t try to reason with them though...you will get called names, etc.
