Flashback 2012: Trump Criticized GOP for Being ‘Mean-Spirited’ on Immigration

There’s been an old Donald Trump interview getting some attention on Twitter today for what Trump had to say in 2012 about the GOP’s approach to immigration:

That time Donald Trump blamed Mitt Romney's loss on alienating Latinos

Trump now says a lot of things about immigration that I agree with. The problem is, he himself probably doesn't even believe in what he's saying. In 2000, he wanted to run on the Reform Party ticket against Pat Buchanan because of Buchanan's "nativist" views, and in 2012, even Mitt Romney (!!) was too much of a "nativist" for Trump. Will the real Donald Trump please stand up?

I suppose that according to his fans, we're supposed to believe that Trump magically saw the light on the illegal immigration issue in 2015. Alternatively we can assume that Trump is just a political fraud who says whatever it takes to get in the media spotlight, whether it's criticizing immigration restriction yesterday or praising it today. I'm betting on the second.

Everyone is “evolving”. I believe that Trump is pro gay marriage and abortion is he not?

Shouldn’t he have to explain his previous comments? I would think so.

Never have been on the Trump bandwagon. Some of the things he has been saying lately are true but I do not believe that he really believes in what he is saying. I really think this is just a game to him.

So you’re sticking with Hillary whose husband had a girl the age of his daughter blowing him in the WH...and then, after staying with him, carries the banner for women of the world.

Now there’s a political fraud!

Trump's comments on immigration are a textbook case of right message, wrong messenger. To him, this election is just another reality show, where you're supposed to be scandalous and provocative for its own sake. Those who trust his Johnny-come-lately conservatism on immigration and most other issues are deluded. People's views can change, but who in his right mind can trust someone who has done an about-face on about a dozen issues in the course of a couple of years?

The same can be said for the other candidates running and you don’t have to go back to the year 2000 to find their flip flops.

News flash, they are all political frauds, even that beloved Ted Cruz. They say one thing then do another.

I’m not invested in any candidate and will watch how Trump plays out. Hopefully, he’ll expose and slap around a lot of these wimps and traitors in the GOP.

“So you’re sticking with Hillary...”

Is the primary over?

Heck, has the first primary even happened yet?

Nobody else is even running, right? You Trump-bots are hilarious.

You don't have to go back to 2000 with Trump either. Back in 2012, even Mitt Romney was too conservative on immigration for Donald.

I'm not committed to any candidate either and agree that they're all opportunists to some degree, but Trump's opportunism and about-faces are probably the most shameless and blatant of all the Republican candidates. I think it's a shame that the candidate who says the right things about one of the most important issues (illegal immigration) is also one of the least sincere.

Yes, why don’t we do that and let the GOPe candidate win the primary and lose the General, again.

I had no idea that the primaries were over and that Donald Trump was officially the Republican nominee. You seem to think so, at least, if your mental vomit can be called “thinking.”

Trump is a political chameleon and always has been. He will say whatever he thinks will score him points with whoever he is trying to get something from, whether it’s the Clintons or conservative voters. The man is playing conservatives for a bunch of suckers. And so far he is succeeding.

I honestly have no idea what his real political convictions are because he keeps changing them. Do I like what he is saying on immigration these days? For the most part, yes. But do I trust him? Not for a New York minute.

Actually he says he’s pro-life and the marriage issue should have been left w/ the states.

As far as flip flopping, I agree, we do have a lot of candidates that have, and we also have regular politicians in this race that make a career out of it. The one thing, however, that Trump IS doing now is carrying the flag, so to speak, on some very important issues and making many of the GOPe candidates look weak and irrelevant. My concern is more of what happens if he stays in and gets elected...will he follow through or will it be more of the same (historic mid-term 2014 relection and nothing to show for it other than more lame promises and excuses)?

Tell me, who is really sincere about this? Or anything that's going on? Do you want someone to talk in a mild manner way, like McCain? Look at what a serpent McCain is.

What do you do with the fact that your demi-god Trump donated over 100 thousand to the Clinton Foundation over the years? Looks like you and your hero are the ones backing Hillary:

The bottom line is that we don't have a reliable and sincere opponent of illegal immigration running for President. The only one saying the right things is an obvious attention-seeking fraud, as to the rest, they're either mealy-mouthed on the subject (Cruz), talk out of both sides of their mouths about it (Walker), or are blatantly open borders (just about everyone else who's running).

To me, illegal immigration is the biggest threat facing America and the most important issue, and all of the candidates are either wrong or insincere about it. I honestly don't know who to support on account of this.

I wouldn't give Hillary the change in my pocket if she was on fire, and I assume you wouldn't either. So why is it OK when Trump does it?

Trump is an opinionated blowhard who shoots off his mouth before he thinks. He says a lot of things that I agree with. If you catch Jeb Bush on the right day, he does too. We need someone with a TRACK RECORD of conservative results — not someone who can shoot off his mouth and say the right things.
