David Jolly Out Front But Many Republicans Undecided on 2016 Senate Choice

There’s no clear favorite in the Republican primary to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016, though U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla. is ahead of the other candidates, a new poll shows.

St. Pete Polls took a survey of likely Florida Republican primary voters for St. Petersblog which was released on Thursday. Jolly takes 22 percent while U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., garners 12 percent. Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, who launched his Senate bid on Wednesday, pulls 11 percent and U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., gets 9 percent.

But 23 percent of Republicans support other candidates (including businessman Todd Wilcox who was not included in the poll) while 22 percent are unsure. Jolly is the best known of the four candidates included in the poll but 59 percent of Florida Republicans are unsure about him. Despite Lopez-Cantera being Gov. Rick Scott’s understudy, 60 percent of those surveyed are unsure of him. Even more Republicans -- 63 percent -- are unsure of Miller and DeSantis.

It’s an open field. From a RP standpoint, Carlos Lopez Cantera would be the best candidate and he had Tea Party support when he was Dade County Assessor.

A “St. Pete Poll” having Jolly in front is obvious, but I don’t consider it particularly scientific. DeSantis has my endorsement here.

I’m also supporting DeSantis in the FL Senate race—he’s got the most conservative record of any congressman from FL and is solid all around. But I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss this poll as “home cooking” for Jolly; “St. Pete Polls” is a reputable, independent polling company that has gotten goodcresults recently.

Among the four prominent Republicans running, I would rank Jolly fourth, behind DeSantis, López-Cantera and Miller, in that order. Jolly is the least conservative of the four, as well as the least experienced politically; I don’t think that Miller would run as well statewide as López-Cantera, but DeSantis is the total package.

I wasn’t expecting to see Jolly out in front, though 22% in a field with low name recognition over a year before the primary is nothing much to crow about. It does show him as a stronger candidate than I thought.

Lopez-Cantera is good? I heard he was the worst one. Were they lying fools who are gun shy cause he’s Hispanic and therefore “can’t be trusted” on shamnesty?

DeSantis running 4th isn’t a good.

Great news on the rat side though, Grayson 30%, Murphy 23%. Even with the negative press Grayson is in front. He can’t win the general. Politics1’s Ron Gunzbuger knows it, which is why he tweets bad things about Grayson, often.

When Scott picked López-Cantera to replace Jennifer Carroll as Lt. Gov., he was reputed to be a conservative; now opinion on him is all over the place. I’m assuming that he is acceptably conservative, which combined with the fact that I think that Congressman Miller has long odds of winning statewide (he’s a former Democrat from the Panhandle area and virtually unknown among the 95% of Floridians that live under Eastern Time) and is no conservative superstar (he’s quite pro-establishment, although so is López-Cantera), I think that López-Cantera is preferable to Miller as of the information that I have right now. But neither one is anywhere as good as Congressman DeSantis.

As for Jolly, he’s “pro-choice” on abortion, or pretty close to it. He was one of only 13 Republican congressmen to vote against blocking a DC law that purportedly prohibits “discrimination” by employers regarding reproductive matters but which in effect can be used to force employers to cover abortion and contraception in their health-insurance plans: http://capwiz.com/nrlc/issues/votes/?votenum=194&chamber=H&congress=1141

Tsk tsk Davie. I just learned that Jolly came out for homo marriage too.

I’m forced to agree with your rankings then though I think Miller would beat Grayson if we’re fortunate enough to see that clown get nominated over Murphy. If he can’t then....he should be 4th, we can’t risk doing anything that could let Grayson actually win.

We all know DeSantis is the most conservative choice, hopefully his campaign will gain some momentum.

Oh, I have no doubt that Miller could (and likely would) beat that aßclown moonbat Grayson; it’s the “moderate” Congressman Murphy that I’m concerned about. He gives off that Bill Nelson “moderate” vibe that too many Floridians are stupid enough for which to fall. And, as I said, my rankings are based on what I know now, and I’d flip Miller and López-Cantera if more positive stuff about the former and/or more negative stuff about the latter came out. But I doubt that DeSantis will be moved from my current ranking, since he’s hands down the best candidate out there.

Jolly didn’t make me Jolly. I think Jolly is worse than Kathy Castor...I wish Adam Putnam would get into the race...

Lopez Cantera won Tea Party support in his campaigns for state Representative and Dade County Assessor. Here’s an attack on him by the local ‘Rat Party:
