Three years behind schedule and some $200 billion over its original budget, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program is finally set to become operational this month.
The fighter jet has been in development for nearly 15 years, weathered half a dozen years of testing and experienced myriad hardware malfunctions and software glitches along the way. Once it's declared ready for combat, it will be the most expensive weapons system in world history.
It will also be the most advanced in the sky. The F-35, also referred to as the Joint Strike Fighter, is touted as the most lethal and versatile aircraft of the modern era. It combines advanced stealth capabilities, radar-jamming abilities, supersonic speed, extreme agility and state-of-the-art sensor fusion technology.
But after all that time and money, supporters are no closer to quelling the detractors who blast the F-35 as a waste.

Obama just can’t wait to retire and destroy all fighter jets and have the F-35 be the only one ,well he could sell the F-22 to China
Uhm, isn't that what testing is supposed to do? Find the problems beforehand?
Unfortunately, the DoD insisted on concurrent flight test and production. So now, those jets that were built during testing when problems were found, will now have to be corrected.
I wouldn’t be surprised if 0bama has pledged the F-22 as collateral for China continuing to purchase our debt.
He probably gave up the USS Ronald Reagan as well.
And it still can't get down in the mud with the A-10 and support troops under attack. A financial and technical boondoogle of the greatest proportion.Follow the campaign contributions on this one.
That decision was made long before Obama got into office. The F-22 buy was capped during the Bush years and the decision was made then to put all their eggs in th F-35 basket. In the mean time fifteen years of war have flown the wings off the aircraft in the inventory and hastened the end of their useful life. So the military has no choice but to make the F-35 work. They have no alternative.
No you are wrong! The F-22 pledge was in the Iranian deal ... more laughter ...

The truth is the libs don't want weapons systems to work. They would rather have pointless negotions (remember nuclear freeze??), make meaningless deadlines, extend them countless times then tout a surrender document as a great negotiated achievement.
Send in the Food Stamp Fighters! We’re down three points in Ohio!
Maybe so, but the F-35 is a 1st class boondoggle. It cannot do the missions of the aircraft it is supposed to replace.
It won’t be able to fly the CAS missions that the A-10 and AV8B Harrier currently perform, it doesn’t have the range or the speed of the FA-18 or F-16. This is one of the worst weapons systems procurement failures in the history of the Pentagon. The Marine Corps has already replaced the AV8B Harrier in two squadrons with the F-35. Problem is, it’s still not cleared to carry ordnance yet making these units non deployable and non combat ready.
Problem is, many folks are either repeating outdated information or just not doing simple research...I’m not cheerleading here, but FR used to be known for doing intensive research and posting FACTUAL information. Not innuendo, opinion or speculation.
>>>> .... the most advanced in the sky
I assume it is also the most flexible in the sky? In its support of multipurpose missions/functions to be the ONE ALL in the sky.
Modular? Minimized tradeoffs? Sounds too good to be true.
Aren’t F16’s, F15’s, and F18’s still being built for other countries? Can’t we get in line to buy those?
After at least 15 years and it still isn’t doing what it is suppose to do then close it down and start building something much better. Imagine all the past aircraft designs and how long it took for them to be built.
No excuse for this. It is to me an obvious boondoggle and many people will lose their lives in a future war.
It has already wiped out thousands of taxpayers.
Lockheed profited as did the Congressional districts where various suppliers were located - which was the purpose all along.
