WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama is set to announce on Wednesday a pilot project to expand broadband access for people who live in public housing, in his administration's latest push to bridge the "digital divide" between the rich and poor.
Working with mayors, internet service providers and other companies and nonprofits, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will make it cheaper and easier for more than 275,000 low-income households with almost 200,000 children to get home internet, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.
Obama is set to speak about the program in Durant, Oklahoma where the Choctaw Tribal Nation is working with four local providers to bring the internet to 425 homes.
The program will also launch in 27 other communities, mainly in large cities, the White House said.

Wow, more of we the producers providing for free that which we work and pay for.............because it’s a right as enumerated in the Constitution, or something.
Not for nuthin, but some cities have public wifi in their high density areas. I always thought that was a good idea. It really is a low cost way to get everyone on the net at a “reasonable” speed.
Of course, if he is talking about hard wiring buildings and “overbuilding” the existing infrastructure, he might just want to set a date at the Supreme Court now—because there are already Federal Regulations regarding building broadband networks in most communities. And guess what—the Feds don’t own the wires. They don’t own the poles. And ALL of the providers pay property taxes and franchise fees for the “privilege” to build their systems.
The fact that kids cannot go to the library or other places that have free internet is really not my problem. It might be nice to have kids actually understand what a library is.
Obie will claim its In both....The Bible....and the stinking koran!!
Guess you missed it in the 1st amendment. “The right to free wifi and use thereof will be provided by the omnipotent governing body without infringement or cost to the governed.”
How long have they been saying that the Book of Revelation is impossible: for how can they transmit pictures of the death scene at the Temple Mount to every home in the world?
We are seeing this possibility increase daily, are we not?
Ghetto bling.
You have life savings? "You didn't work for that. You're a winner in life's lottery." You live in a nice neighborhood. Not your doing, you just won a position in it by being white or something.

Mr. Community Organizer did wonders with Federal money for low-cost housing in Chicago.
Grim proving ground for Obama's housing policy"About 99 of the units are vacant, many rendered uninhabitable by unfixed problems, such as collapsed roofs and fire damage. Mice scamper through the halls. Battered mailboxes hang open. Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale - a score so bad the buildings now face demolition."

Fannie, Freddie spent millions on lobbyingRaines, the company's former chief financial officer, Timothy Howard, and former controller Leanne Spencer were accused in a civil lawsuit of manipulating earnings over a six-year period at Fannie. Raines' predecessor, former Fannie Mae chief James Johnson, is a prominent Democrat who was an adviser to 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and was selected by Obama to help vet his vice presidential prospects. But controversy over favorable loan deals he obtained with Countrywide Financial Corp., a bank seriously damaged by the mortgage meltdown decline, prompted him to abruptly resign that post in June.
